Opened by the creator of Sakura — the popular "back packer" bar/restaurants scattered throughout China and southeast Asia — this cafe features the same setup, decor and food-style. Perfect for a lazy afternoon or a students' night out. Food includes affordable full breakfasts, salads, pastas and burgers, in addition to some of the cheapest beer in town.
With one location already in Wudaokou, Beijing, Helen's Cafe managed to make its way south. The owner of the popular backpacker Sakura cafes scattered throughout China has continued his new chain of restaurants, aimed at college students eager for a western meal at a lower price.
Helen's is an interesting amalgamation, cafe by day and bar by night. With specials such as "Coffree Mondays" — with free black coffee served all day — bringing in a steady following of loyal Fudan University students throughout the day to study, work or just chat with friends, the cafe can turn into a packed house at night. "The Yard Fridays," featuring two free yards of beer starting at 5 p.m., and "Shooters Saturday Night Fever" — where Kamikaze and tequila shooters are just YY10 — all but guarantee an enjoyable evening.
If you're still there Sunday morning, "Smoke Out Sunday" offers YY20 hookah all day.
The restaurant has a menu full of breakfast choices, sandwiches and "probably" the best hot chocolate in town — it's what the sign on the doorway says. But at the end of the day, a cheeseburger and fries from Helen's hits the spot.
