Continue past the vegetable vendors and clotheslines to find this member of the Ginger chain, hidden from sight just down the lane. Serving up delicious fusion fare in a small and friendly space, this happily situated café offers an escape into a trendy and artistic yet authentically Shanghainese setting.

This latest addition to the "Ginger" chain sits tucked away on charming 248 Taikang Lu. We begin with the antipasti platter (¥55), a selection of grilled and marinated mushrooms, sweet red peppers, aubergine and lemon shrimp; deliciously citrous. The cheesy spinach and tofu quiche (¥58) artfully blends this traditional favorite with a new-age veggie style. Our ginger rice bowl (¥60) is pleasantly flavorful and comes with a smooth miso soup. The apple crumble (¥30) is a bit bland but satisfies our hankering for that homemade taste. Flourless chocolate and walnut cake (¥40) does not disappoint; dense and rich, we're tempted to order another. Miss Ginger's small size demands you be friendly with your neighbors and similarly petite portions are a bit disappointing in relation to the price, but the menu is herbivore-friendly and the location a unique escape into the new "old" Shanghai. –trista Baldwin
