Though hidden behind a modest facade on Xinzha Lu, RU Cafe really makes the most of a fairly meager space. Downstairs, diners can sit on the high stools and bask in the warm aromas from the open kitchen, whilst those with time to spare can linger on the more relaxed second floor, with it's interesting selection of reading materials. RU offers a great range of sandwich sets and brunch specials. I selected the RICH (RMB45) which promised potato salad with yogurt dressing alongside a lamb pita with a choice of beverage. The potato salad was certainly filling but overwhelmed my puny sandwich. I eagerly anticipated a steaming pita, overflowing with salad and succulent strips of meat for me to dig into. I have to say, this neatly folded bite-size version was a bit of a disappointment. All four bites were a pleasure; but where's the fun in that? RU's real strength lies in it's generous coffees and fresh bread. Be sure not to leave without a German sourdough (RMB32) or French baguette (RMB12) tucked under your arm. -John Lynch
