This restaurant's eclectic menu of Cantonese dishes with a mix of Hunan, Sichuan and Western fare is as colorful as the décor which seeks to emulate a 1950’s modern American diner. Less language-savvy diners may have difficulty navigating the two menus available only in Chinese, however, if you can manage to pick out the items which are actually available, you'll already be ahead of the game and on your way to a varied sampling of Chinese cuisine.

We're not sure what kind of Chinese food Wenxing is trying to emulate. With a tacky and colorful décor reminiscent of a 1950s American diner, Wenxing caters primarily to Chinese diners, serving a mix of Cantonese, Hunan, Sichuan, and Western dishes. With two menus written only in Chinese, it was not very impressive to see that most of what looked interesting was not available. We started with a tasteless assorted cold dish of tofu, Chinese sausage, tripe and chicken feet (RMB38) which arrived after the oily and under-salted stir-fried Hudon noodles (RMB25). Our sweet and sour pork (RMB32) ended up being a sweet and sour fat cube dish and the cabbage hot pot soup with meat balls (RMB25) was nothing extraordinary. We liked the stuffed grilled eggplant whose flavors had a good enough balance to satisfy our taste buds. However, unless you're stuck in the neighborhood or you're looking for a nice place to hang out, Wenxing is not worth the detour. -Kim-Tien Huynh
