This downtown deli is the type of delivery joint you should put on your speed dial. The kitchen cranks out hefty portions of American-caliber meat, and delivery is prompt. Try the roast beef and melted Swiss sandwich. Tender cuts of beef come topped with grilled onions, tomato and lettuce.

.. oh, and if H&M is retail therapy, then New York City Deli's chocolate cookies are the perfect cure for office/work blues. At any time of the day.

Here's my verdict for their chocolate chip cookies:
OH. MY. GAWD. I died, headed straight to Heaven and wished that client email never came in. Call for delivery, they arrive in under 30 minutes at your work desk, pop them in the microwave for 2 minutes, mad rush to fit all of them (at once, of course) into your mouth and wash it all down with a glass of cold milk. Oh yes. Paradiso.
Definitely worth dying for. Over and over and over again.

Excellent food, excellent prices!
Usually its too much to eat, and I have leftovers for the next day (which is a good thing!)
I Always pop in there to order food when I'm in the area.
My local equivalent is Munchies, which is also good.
When is someone going to open a 24/7 delivery place in Shanghai...

I've heard raves about their chocolate chip cookies so I'm dying to try them out soon!

Very nice chocolate chip cookie - six cookies for 28 rmb - crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside - a must-try.

Let me just say straight out - I found THE BEST PHILLY CHEESE STEAK SANDWICH IN THE WORLD. I don't often eat it, because it's so often done a bit wrong - the steak's often a bit stringy or you take a bite and a whole bunch of beef comes out with your mouthful 'cos it's too tough or strung together. Yuck! I'd heard good things about NYC Deli, and realised it was just round the corner from where I'm at, so headed down there to check it out.
I nearly walked straight past the little cafe. It's TINY. Basically only enough space to step inside to make your order. There's a tiny counter space for 2-3 people to sit at, so it's obvious that this is a take-away or delivery joint only. The Philly cheese steak sandwich sounded too good to miss, and I was right - it came on a deliciously crisp yet soft and fresh French baguette, and a very generous portion of beef. A tumble of soft onions were mixed in and loads of melted Swiss cheese. A very simple sandwich, but it absolutely blew me away - a pretty big deal considering I normally steer clear of sandwiches!
The beef and onions were served piping hot, and the flavour was rich and intense. The Swiss cheese added the perfect amount of moistness and texture to it and each bite was pure tastebud heaven. The texture of the beef was fantastic - soft and tender and perfectly seasoned. I also loved how the French baguette was crisp on the outside, but very soft and 'collapsible' once you took a bite, can't stand baguettes that are so so crusty and hard they cut into the roof of your mouth when you take a bite!
The sizeable sandwich is served with a pot of coleslaw - which was cold and delicious, but could have used a little bit more mayonnaise in it. It's also served with a pickle - perhaps it's an American thing to do so but it definitely didn't appeal to me so I left it alone ;)
Absolutely outstanding for 38元 (US$5.50) - not the cheapest compared to the other ultra-cheap delish foods I've found in the area.. but still a bargain compared to Aussie standards. Plus, it gives us a good dose of Western food whenever the craving strikes. Will most definitely be back, and cannot wait until they reopen after Chinese New Year!

An order for a cheese sandwich from New York City Deli resulted in a container holding six cookies arriving at our office one day. Obviously, we were not wholly dismayed at the prospect of eating these large, thick cookies which, we soon discovered, are delicious and possibly some of the best you can find. Think thick, soft and loaded with chunks of chocolate and walnuts. We dare say it's worth ordering a batch, heating them up and doing the old dunk routine with a glass of milk.

damn fine sandwhich...worth it while the service was a bit shaky when we went (the space is not really meant to accomodate dine-in) the sandwhiches were delicious. more of a carry-out or delivery joint. the sourdough baguette was right on, high quality meat and cheese, and if you get a chance try the cole-slaw, it stole the show....i definitely will be back.

sucky service they might have good sandwiches available in xxl size but if you go for dinner expect a long wait for your food. last time i went they didn't even have cutlery to eat (we didn't order sandwiches!!!!!). anyplace that tells you they don't have cutlery is not getting a second chance from me. sorry!!!

delicious these sandwiches rock.

This place is great. Went for the first time today and had a corn beef/swiss on rye - smokin' good. Mighty nice fella working the register as well. Coleslaw was just fine. Going back for the cheese steak s'wich and some potato salad next weekend. Snap!
