Celebrity chef David Laris escapes his namesake restaurant with this cool sandwich chain. Essentially an upscale deli, hungry families and shoppers alike can be found chowing down on funky paninis (try the Egyptian chicken, with curry and chutney) and gourmet cold cuts all over the city.

Deli Oasis

Recently, we revisited Slice, an inviting little deli a la David Laris, having heard that some new items now graced the already creative menu. Great for a quick bite, there are a variety of choices from deli-style assorted cold cuts, healthy salads and adventurous sandwiches, home baked sweets and a full page of beverages. Chosen for its name more than ingredients, The Number One (YY45) was a tasty combo of smoked ham, sliced eggs, tomato, lettuce and gherkins on a half baguette. The Mr. Reuben (YY58) was filled with a thick slice of flavorful pastrami, sauerkraut, Emmental cheese, and Russian dressing on a delicious rye bread panini. Both of these new additions to the menu, served on a small cheese board devoid of any garnishes, would have appeared less lonely if accompanied by a few chips. If trying to decide on an add-on, opt for the Go-Go juice (YY38), a nice blend of orange, mango, papaya and pineapple offering a welcome dose of vitamin C. -Peggy Rosen

They have a REALLY good Egyptian chicken sandwich. I'd go out of my way just to have it again.

Slice:I beg to differ about Slice Forget the tuna panini - for 50rmb, mash tuna served with 2 miserable lettuce leaves was a real disappointment. And our coffee was burnt. What a let down after all the positive write-ups in the major English magazines circulating around Shanghai. Maybe we'll order the pictured panini above. But then again...

Just another place in Shanghai where you pay money to be seen, but where the food itself is nothing to write home about.... these days there are plenty of decent sandwich places in town that do just as good a job for half the price.

I don't understand what is the big deal with this place. The food is so-so.... The service is terrible. Middle of my meal as I was eating my sandwich, the service staff made me pay the bill. I was so pissed off that I didn't order my desserts. When I explained to her and the manager that it is rude to ask for payment in the middle of the customer's meal, they replied that it is management's decision and policy. I can't believe this is the result of David Laris' professionalism.... I believe that money should be either paid upon order at the counter or at the end of the meal.

Awful. 2nd time I have eaten here and its a diappointment every time. Don't get the Greek Salad, no greens, 2 olives, and the rest is cucumbers. Definitely not worth getting a 3rd chance.

Dear Boston, Thanks for taking the time to review your experience at Slice. We take all of our customer comments very seriously and use them to reflect, modify and improve our product and services. Everyone around the world has their own variations of the Greek Salad – ours is a traditional version which does not contain any greens and is full of chunky salad pieces, fresh oregano and homemade vinaigrette. Please let me know of anything else which made your experience ‘awful’ (if not just the salad) as we would like to rectify the situation. I would also like to respond to jeremyseow. Thanks for your comments. We were never out to make a big deal about our restaurant, but rather to provide great food and great service. Our cash policy tends for customers to pay either at the beginning or at the end of their meal – whatever they like. I apologize your meal was interrupted and assure it is not our policy to make customers feel uncomfortable. Any other suggestions really welcome. Thanks, A Hunt (Slice GM).
