Fondue Fiasco

On a dark Monday evening, we hurried past the cute homespun chalkboard proclaiming this restaurant to be a "Swiss Fondue House" and into a room with a décor which borrowed more than a few tips from Little House on the Prairie. With sunny gingham table cloths draped over honey-tinted wooden furniture, the room was whispering promises to us of an earthy, homemade meal--promises that were broken again and again over the course of the night. We started the meal with the salmon platter (RMB78). The insipid pile of sickly, wilting salmon tasted so alarming that our friend, a self-proclaimed "garbage can," could not stomach more than just one bite. The Speck and Melon salad (RMB48) fared slightly better--its cuts of meat were a healthy red and accompanied by a neat stack of balled cantaloupe. The beef fillet steak entrée (RMB88) was tender and well grilled. Unfortunately, it was eaten in about five moderately sized bites and was served with a dollop of mashed potato that had a fabulous texture but lacked flavor. The proffered Swiss fondue for two (RMB198, RMB298 for four people) certainly had enough bread for two people; however, the thin layer of cheese bubbling at the bottom of the fondue pot was only enough to coat less than half the contents of the bread basket. The sweetly earnest waiter, heartily embarrassed by the salmon fiasco, took the item off our bill and offered us complimentary espressos stating a supplier mix up as the culprit; however, the offered olive branch was a small Band-Aid for an overpriced, underwhelming meal. Almost all restaurants have growing pains; however, soft openings, tastings and countless tweaks should help to avoid flinging open unready doors. Our suggestion to Glismatten is to keep tweaking because while there’s potential, the doors are still not ready. Dan Ouyang

Glismatten is a newly opened western restaurant in Taikang Road (Tian Zi Fang). The restaurant uses Illy coffee beans to provide the best flavor and serves American and West European cuisine foods. The most recommend dishes are classic Caesar salads, homemade lasagna, Mexican BBQ ribs, Columbian fried chicken, French orange duck, and German sausages with mashed potatoes. It also offers traditional English brunch with roast beef, fresh prepared vegetables and Yorkshire puddings. At the weekends, there are theme parties and buffets waiting for your joint.

Sounds like some version of Chicken cordon blue. You know... i was actually really interested in trying fried chicken from south america and therefore asked, and was actually in taikang yesterday contemplating whether i should try you out. Glad i did not. Since seeing your reply my curiosity still made me ponder why i had not ever heard of "Columbian fried chicken"... a quick google only resulted in this post and it seems your chinese blog where you chose to complain about questions asked by a genuine and possible regular customer and not someone who is 來找碴.

During our first, and most definitely not our last, visit to Glismatten, we were happily surprised! Upon our arrival we were greeted very professionally and very politely in English, led to our table in a quiet, comfortable room on the second floor. After water arrived we were presented with a small but delectable menu. We ordered the onion soup, fondue for two, peppermint tea and a dark German lager... all the while commenting to each other how warm the atmosphere and the 5 star service was while praying the food would not prove to be yet another disappointing copy of great food. The soup arrived. We sipped. The fondue arrived, we dipped and tasted... We then asked for the owner who arrived at our table in moments. "The atmosphere and true five star service are completely overshadowed by the absolutely fantastic and authentic food!" I almost gushed in happiness. For dessert we ordered their home made cheese cake, one coffee and one chocolate flavoured... Again, exquisite. Glismatten is, beyond any doubt, a true dining experience and more than worthy of my continued patronage. I strongly recommend to anyone of discerning taste to dine at Glismatten without fear. 5 stars to you Glismatten, 6 if they had them!
