Savory Swordfish

A short while ago we popped by ASC's Kim Crawford wine dinner hosted at Allure restaurant in Le Royal Meridien Shanghai. Having missed the chance to go to Allure several times in the past, we were excited to finally taste some of chef Michael Wendling's creations. After a few glasses of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc 2007, we sat down at our assigned seat and happily awaited the first course. Set before us was an impeccable dish. Slices of roasted swordfish crusted with black olives set upon a tartar of tomato, coriander and celery with bright and enticingly fresh chopped tomatoes sprinkled on top seemed to perfectly blend simplified French cuisine with light, Mediterranean flavors. The subtle saltiness of the olives was wonderfully balanced by the tartar, the swordfish so succulent it literally melted in our mouths. Undoubtedly, the L'espadon (YY118 net) exceeded our expectations--we probably could have eaten it for every course and been content.

The chef at Allure is a master. For starters I had the scallop dish - the best scallops I've had in my life. For mains I had the sea bass with finely diced pistachios and soy bean sprouts which was delicious especially with rich, flavorsome sauce (I forget the ingredients). The dessert was unforgettable. An all-chocolate tart with a sweet, gooey fondant-type filling, chocolate shavings and macadamia sorbet. Decor is excellent but service is even better. The waitstaff are so incredibly polite and well-trained.

Place where i'll return for great service and food.

The 7 hour lamb shank and foie gras was fantastic!

For families with young kids, this is definite one of the few baby friendly fine dining restaurants.
