Just went there 2 days ago.Its sad...one week ago i left a comment, that i cant wait to come back there again!..and now...i cant say, that its not good, they just change all menu...nothing from that, what we loved...Maybe,they changed chef?if yes,i want to know, where is he cooking now!cause this menu compare to previous absolutely without any 'oooohhh' and "mmmmmm",like we have eaten there before...:( For two we had 8 tapas, and only one i like it- vegetable ratatoille.other was just ok. If i wouldnt try food from previous menu, probably,i would say, that was good.but for now,i dont think, that we will come back...:(

Surprisingly good. I loved the foie gras and the roast beef tartines. Misses included the moussaka and the lamb patties. Overall, I loved the menu but at 188rmb when most of my favorites involved mostly bread, I'm not sure how good of a deal this was. I'll be back either way, if just to try the camembert tartine I didn't get to this time. Pics, etc. at: http://blog.57575777.com/thediningsecretary/2010/02/28/filling-up-on-french-tapas-at-cantine/

The service and decor in this restaurant are poor to terrible.... but the food really really good and their 188RMB all-you-can-eat deal that includes one aperitif/beer/soft drink which is extremely good value.
I suspect that this restaurant might be a better experience with a small group of two or three people. As it was, I booked for a group of eight. We were stuck upstairs by ourselves in a room with decor that can be best described as resembling the inside of warehouse. In another context you might imagine this to be chic and fashionable, but here it merely seemed cheap and totally lacking in ambiance. If you come with a smaller group you will be seated downstairs, which is at least somewhat better.
The young man who served us appeared to be trying hard, but was extremely lacking in experience and appeared to be totally unsupported and overwhelmed. We ordered drinks and then waited 20 minutes for them to appear. We were entirely alone, so eventually I had to get up and go downstairs to enquire where our drinks were. When the drinks finally appeared they were very rough, for example my drink was supposed to contain blue curacao but was totally clear, so I strongly suspect he made it wrong. At any rate, what is for certain is that had no ice and no dressing at all - I nearly mistook it for a glass of water. We then had to practically beg him to take our food orders.
The food itself was pretty slow to arrive, which given that the restaurant wasn't exactly full was disappointing.
And yet... just when I was about to write the place off entirely.... The one saving grace was that when the food itself arrived it was generally fantastic. Almost every dish was greeted with oohs and ahs by everyone at the table.
In summary then... scrapes a 3* rating purely on the quality of the food. Don't go in a large group, and don't go for a special occasion and you can enjoy some really top-notch food at bargain prices. Now if they would just spruce up their decor and train their staff a bit better they might really be on to something...

the only unpleasant thing was that the bossy Chinese girl sitting near the door ordering drinks from the waiter with so offensive and superior tone, just dont know who she is yet apparently, i could read from her attitude that she is supposed to be one of those spoiled Shanghainess girl, my thoughts had been proved by my Chinese staffs, she told me she is the wife of one of owners here. Could you transfer my opinion to her that, treat the staffs as her family member before start bull the scene, coz i think for all people in the world, it will be such a disgusting experience viewing someone plays posh facing clients and the queen facing staff.

I have heard a lot about this restaraunt and I thought I would give them the ultimate test - my wifes birthday! We choice the all you can eat option for 188rmb. The wine menu was well listed, the service was very effecient then came the food. Wow! Every dish was as good as the previous one, we will be back.

Cantine do fabulous tapas - French and Mediterranean style, so I've heard. Tapas is one of my favourite styles of eating, since it means you can order way way more than usual and try out a whole lot more dishes. Suits me!
It's a small, cosy little restaurant, with a huge orange bar right in the middle and the tables surrounding it. I did initially feel a little odd because the 2 bartenders there weren't doing much (it wasn't a busy night) and so kept watching us. I don't particularly like being analysed whilst I order, and talk, and eat! But after awhile, I got over it and didn't notice because I was concentrating too much on the food.
The dishes came out surprisingly quickly, which delighted me. Beautifully presented, I wondered how they managed to cook and arrange all the dishes so quickly, since not all of them could be pre-made. Nearly all the dishes were perfectly cooked and tasted delicious, though I found the portions rather small for the price.
My favourite was, by far, the Fois Gras. It looked fairly standard and unexciting on the plate, but was rich and creamy and absolutely glorious. Strangely, it came with a few slices of (burnt) cheap toast, which we ignored since we were also given a great bread baset filled with focaccia and French baguette. My other favourite was the Brie cheese on French baguette. It had a fancy name on the menu which I forgot, but the cheese was very lightly grilled and and warm and gooey on the crusty bread. It was drizzled with something.. a basil oil perhaps? Not sure, but it made these little bite sized morsels of pleasure just a treat to eat.
The only disappointing dish was the Duck leg confit, which was largely inedible. The duck leg looked meaty and delicious, but proved to be dry and tough. It also sat on a bed of beans, which didn't help the dryness of the dish.
Overall, though, the dishes were fantastic and I loved how they all came out promptly. My fear with tapas is that some come out quickly, and then there's a prolonged wait before the remainder dishes come out. This was not the case. They came out regularly and swiftly. The only improvement would be to lower the prices by 30-50%, then this restaurant would deserve a full 5 stars.

We were fortunate to obtain a reservation on short notice last Thursday. We loved this place and found it magnificent in almost every way. The menu offerings were so appealing it was difficult to choose. The service was efficient without being too speedy, warm and friendly, and the decor is positively spectacular. Our only quibble was that it was a bit loud and not the destination for a truly romantic experience. But, we enjoyed a fabulous meal in gorgeous surroundings.

I finally got here after a friend's constant recommendation. It's a cute, warm, romantic place, comfortable without being stuffy, which is how I'd also describe the food. I love terrine de foie gras, and theirs are terrific. That said, I fell in love with their crunchy scallops carpaccio and authentic duck leg confit; Limited but eclectic wine list, which goes with the food and atmosphere - not aiming for the 'high end crowd' that needs everything foamed, but decidedly hitting the right marks for people who like honest, regional French food. Bravo.

Visiting from the UK with friends from Boston and one 'new' local, we had an excellent dining experience at this bistro last week. The friendly unhurried atmosphere makes for a relaxed feel, the staff were attentive and chatty rather than stand-offish as can so often be the case with restaurants of this quality. The food when we finally managed to wrench ourselves away from the bar and order was superb. The oxtongue in port wine sauce which I ordered was one of the best I've tasted. All in all, the nearly four hours we spent there were more than worth it.

If I lived closer it is certainly a place I would visit when hunger or the need for a convivial evening stuck me - an ideal neighborhood restaurant, They have a great lunch trade and the bar is popular for drop-in and as a date place. All-in-all this street hits the right note for the area and the clientele. They have a terrific menu, excellent price range wine list and cocktails, also the service is just right.

Well, I have been there once again 2 weeks ago and I definitively like the place. For me this is an excellente food for the prices. Always good quantities, very creative food, excellent products. The new menu is much better looking and the content is quite new. The decor is warmer now and rotating expos of paintings.

They have a shop that sells retail products in it, but unfortunately doesn't carry the really premium brands. It's just standard stuff you can get at places like carrefour for a marked up price.

I really like this place. Nice food, decor, music, friendly service and not too busy. Free and fast wireless is nice too.

The restaurant is pretty cool, neighbourhoody (what? That's a word!) but with a nice orange and black colour scheme. No complaints about the food especially the rich beef stew and spicy tomato soup. Drinks prices are OK, and the service is good.
(If you like the food here though, you should really check out the same food at the deli next door.. )

Excellent! Well, I may be a bit biased because it's literally around the corner from my house - but I did go the other night with a group of friends and we all properly enjoyed ourselves. The service was great - very attentive, the dinner menu is small but offers a good selection of choices. I had the duck confit which was very tender (falling off the bone) and it was served with beans (maybe butter beans...not sure). I also had one of the chocolate desserts which was excellent, not super sweet or too big - just the right portion size and was served with some mango sorbet which was a nice complement to the rich chocolate.
Great place, not too crowded yet but I think like one of the reviewers said above, if more people discover this place it could become very popular!

Give the cheese platter a try, it's come highly recommended from a few sources.

Not in the most lively location, however this place is wonderful in that it has good French food and isn't overly busy or fussy. Mind you this could change if it starts getting popular.
The serving staff were helpful but unobtrusive, and the (admittedly short) wine list had some tasty items - they were sold out of the French Cabernet I wanted unfortunately. I'd definitely recommend this place for a chilled out lunch or dinner. It's a bit out of the way but worth the trip...

I really do love this place. Have been there about 5 times now and do admittedly go because it is close to where we live. BUT, the food it great. I am steadily working my way through the menu and have to say that I have not had anything even slightly disappointing at all. Add to that an extremely reasonably priced and very tasty bottle of wine for RMB145 and Bob's yer proverbial. If you live in Jingan, please support this place!!!

French Tapas
No longer a neighborhood secret, this petite restaurant has become a haven for not only those who appreciate simple French bistro-style dishes, but also those who appreciate excellent French-style tapas. Cantine retains a limited French-style dinner menu, but the tapas craze now dominates. If French bistro is what you crave, order the grilled beef tenderloin (YY130), a simple salad and a glass of wine. If you are up for a culinary adventure, go for the tapas. On our most recent visit we sampled nearly everything on the extensive (and extraordinary) tapas menu. You can order a la carte, but we suggest you opt for the YY188 special which includes free-flow soft drinks and one glass of wine or beer. A few of our favorites included the house choice prawn salad (YY65), beef carpaccio with a hint of garlic over greens (YY52), and Greek-style spanakopita (YY52). Forego the fois gras terrine and opt for the creative crispy duck rolls (YY48). Don't forget to leave room for some outstanding deserts--we finally found one of the best tiramisus (YY35) in town. Will we return? You bet. --Peggy Rosen
