The only reason I'm giving Jean Georges three stars is because of the food, not because the food was bad, but because it wasn't spectacular. I think when you go to an "upscale" restaurant like this that the food really should blow you away. The presentation was nice, but taste-wise it wasn't anything special. What I loved about it was everything else. Service was impeccable, view was amazing, restaurant was beautiful, but the food...was just ok.

The foie gras starter is the reason to go there because that is the most incredible combination of foie gras & fruits that I have ever eaten. Then it goes downhill.... the rest of the food is unspectacular and it certainly does not live up to the hype that the press makes it out to be. The corkage is outrageous at RMB800 a bottle! I don't even know how to respond....

Where You Eat

Name: Lustia Putranto Profession: Marketing Manager

I'm perpetually on a quest for great food in whatever city I find myself to be in. Fortunately, this is not a difficult task in Shanghai. For a no-hassle lunch or dinner, I opt for Coconut Paradise for their savory Thai food and prompt, friendly service. Its charming and serene ambiance provides a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. A sucker for spicy food, I never pass up their fish cakes and green beef curry--extra spicy of course. Enoteca is one of my perennial favorites. With an extensive wine list and delectable food menu, it's the perfect place to wine, dine and enjoy the comfort of good company without breaking the bank. When it comes to indulgence, Jean-Georges is it. Similar to its New York counterpart, the decor is opulent and exquisite and the food is haute cuisine at its finest. I especially love the amuse bouche selection prior to my favorite entree--the sea bass.

On my previous visit to Jean Georges back in April 2007 I had at best a spectacular evening, the restaurant was full, service was buzzing and cusine what I expected. I had to return simply for two reasons, one, to see if it was still open as word on the street kept telling me they were closed, and two, it was again time for a little treat and to spend some money (not something that most people rae participating in at present, but read on...) Firstly when I made my reservation I was asked if I would prefer the fine dining restaurant or casual dining restaurant. As it happens Jean Georges now has two restaurants, something quite different than being closed! I dined in the fine dining where there is now two tasting menus and a prix fixe to choose from, Nougatine, the 'casual dining restaurant offers an a la carte menu with some similar dishes, same cusine but lower price, smart move, and quite a few people taking advantage on the night I went. Our meal in the fine dining was in a word sublime, admittedly not as busy as the last time I went which may have been the reason the staff were catering to our every whim, even the western manager chipping in with presenting and pronouncing dishes. I noticed that the service standards were straight and to the point not a lot of fussing or stuffy, close to being abrupt but at least well thought. The food was great, good size portions on the prix fixe and a 'bargain' at under rmb600 for 4 courses including an amuse bouche of truffle, almond and potato. They have changed the old armchair seats for new modern ones which are comfy, however they need to follow suit with the rest of the furnishings. Overall we had a great evening and I for one am happy to see Jean Georges still here.

Bad service attitude!

This place offers half-priced champagne cocktail in a misleading way. Don't ever get cheated by the price on the menu.

The mexican manager of this resto speaks ugly English in an impolite way. So keep your feet out of this place.

Prices on the Bund are ridiculously high anyway, but how are half-price drinks misleading? Did they call it a half-price champagne cocktail and then not put much champagne in it? Or you think the half-price should have been the full price? Service at JG is usually pretty good. I'm curious, was there more to the bad service than just the manager's accent?

...was there last night, for me the best place to be on a wednesday night. Small but nice crowd, good atmosphere, more women than men ! Bought one bottle of champagne got another one free, GREAT. I would be more forgiving for somebody trying to speak another language especially here in China. See you next week !

Little Miss Helenehu......I think if you are mistaken on your feelings about jean georges wednesday night they offer a really nice deal on champagne, buying one bottle and getting one for free its supper nice deal..... and please im just going to ask you one question..... how many languages do you speak???? when you speak more than 4 languages you can complaint about the accent of the manager!!!!!!!......... By the way if you dont have the money to spend in a discount place, dont go..... there are a lot of other cheap places for you to go......

Anyways have a good time

Merdre. The problem is not about money. It is rather about a mistake that ur restaurant made at promoting your champagne cocktail event.!!!! No one has ever informed us that the price on the menu is of discount price!!! And the server at the phone call i made also told me that the discount price is nearly 40 RMB. So how come we have to pay almost 90 RMB at the end??? Would you please tell me ,Sir??

Anyway, If the manager listened to his customer instead of being so impatient and impolite, things wouldn't have gone so badly. And speaking 4 languages is definitely not an excuse for the accent. Buff...... I speak 3 languages!!!

I used to think that Laris was so so ... Now I realise that Laris is pretty good compared to Jean George. The bento lunch would have been rather tasty, had it arrived warm. Nothing spectacular about the food considering it's supposed to be fine dining.

Also, the uniforms on the waite staff was rather awful. Hellowwwww are you guys colour blind? Even Tier II city staff have better uniforms.

I wished I'd spent my $ somewhere else.

My wife and I dined there last Saturday night (Apr 11) and our opinion that this is the best resturant in Shanghai was reaffirmed. The service was attentive without being intrusive and the food, as always, was excellent. JG will remain at the top of our list.
