East-West Canvas
Coming in from the cold for a late afternoon repast, we were seated downstairs in the bar area--preparations for a late evening dinner party had taken over the dining room. Let down but not deterred, we skimmed the menu of East-West flavors. Following the fusion principle, we started with the prosciutto melon appetizer (RMB40) with a side of creamy goat cheese and drizzled pesto. Our accompanying potato garlic soup (RMB25) was comforting though not garlicky in the least. The spaghetti Bolognese (RMB40) kept us satisfied until the roasted chicken with herbs (RMB90) arrived served with grilled vegetables and a tasty sauce poured on thick. Sadly the sauce outshone the main. A steaming plate of penang char kway teow (RMB45) brought our taste buds back to life, but the German black forest cake (RMB35) that followed was nothing particularly special given the price. They’ve still got some kinks to work out--perhaps a heavier hand with the spices and serving spoon might help. Stephanie Thoma
