This USED to be one of the better restaurants in Shanghai. Seems like David Laris himself has become too arrogant and occupied with other projects. The place has really gone downhill - the food, the service. But the prices are still extremely high.
For 1/4 of the price, might be worth it. In the meantime, there are plenty of other restaurants on the Bund.

Second Bite
Laris is Still Gourmet
David Laris's restaurant at Three on the Bund is synonymous with sophisticated dining. On a recent visit we rediscovered why this classy restaurant is among the best of the best in Shanghai. Seated window-side, we had a perfect view of the neon-lit skyline as we began with a crispy Caesar salad (RMB110) dabbled with a delicate dressing and an ample serving of large, tasty shrimp. The hot and cold foie gras (RMB158) topped with bellini jelly was outstanding and inventive, as was a white asparagus salad (RMB118) with Parma ham, shaved parmesan cheese and a balsamic vinegar reduction atop a bed of arugula accompanied by a delicious walnut flan. The mains were equally scrumptious, however the winner was the duck five ways (RMB228) which included duck mousse, seared and roasted duck breast, kidney and liver consommé and duck confit. Dessert was a shared dessert tasting platter (RMB108) consisting of a creamy passion fruit meringue, outstanding cheese cake creme brulee, chocolate fondant and rum ice cream (for the chocoholics) and pineapple mousse with coconut sorbet. The service was impeccable from start to finish. Though expensive, this is still a go-to place for special occasions. Peggy Rosen

Laris continues to be the best western meal of any category in town. It is nice to be on the Bund in a restaurant where the food is good, the service excellent, the ambiance is wonderful, and you don't have rationalize to yourself that really, no really, the food is ok, i.e. across the street at M On The Bund.

Owned by Australian David Laris, Laris is devastingly gorgeous - intimate and very refined. It obviously attracts the wealthy, and also stupid people like us ;) Chris insisted that we had to go somewhere special since it was my birthday, so I figured I'd best not argue :P The interior is warm, candle-lit and boasts an impressive number of staff. So many in fact that there were as many staff as they were diners - quite odd. But it meant the service was exceedingly prompt, and attentive to boot. We were delighted to be seated in the luxurious leather couches, but ended up scooting close together so it we only used about 1/4 of the table ;)
Upon being seated, the waiter announced that when the Meridien hotel concierge booked us the meal, he asked for 2 complimentary drinks of our choice to be sent to us. How nice!! I delightedly ordered a delicious (and incredibly potent!) Lychee martini and Chris got a Verdhello, though in retrospect we realised he should've picked an expensive Scotch or something ;)
Since we'd actually eaten prior to going to the restaurant (d'oh!!!!) we decided to save our stomachs and share an entree - Pan-seared scallops with cauliflower, confit tomato, lemon and rocket leaves. It was frankly much smaller than anticipated. It worked out to $10 (!!!!!) per scallop, which just about had me half-fainted. I halved my allocated two scallops, in an effort to make them last longer, but it was all in vain.... because they were SO GOOD! They were seared and fragrant on the outside, and tender and juicy on the inside. I know first-hand how difficult it is to cook scallops perfectly, so really appreciated how perfect these were, off-set with the subtle tang of tomato (though, weirdly, it came with mini florets of cauliflower).
Our mains are a story onto themselves. THE $100 RISOTTO. Gotta put that in bold and capitals because I am swearing it is the FIRST AND LAST TIME we will ever spend that much money on a little scoop of rice!!!! Chris insisted that we get that as one of the mains, and money aside, it was one of the best dishes I've eaten in my life. The risotto was infused the the mascarpone cheese and the black truffles lent the most luxurious, strong flavour to the dish. The risotto's flavours alone played a riot in my mouth, yet there was sitting atop it all large chunks of juicy, fresh lobster. Chris said the $100 was well-worth it when he witnessed my expression upon first mouthful ;)
The other main was the Fillet of Veal with herb and parmesan crust, confit potatoes and truffle bone marrow sauce, for the bargain (ahem) price of $80. It was so tender it melted in the mouth, the parmesan and herb crust giving a satisfying, crisp crunch. It only had a small pool of truffle sauce to mop up with the veal, but the veal was so juicy and tasty it needed little else. Absolutely divine.
Dessert was Pandan leaves infused pannacotta with fresh mango puree, which I was keen on because it sounded so unusual. It was rich and creamy but could have been a little stronger on the pandan flavour (which I was a big fan of). I didn't like the mango puree because it was just too different and was a little sour, but Chris thought the panacotta really needed the diference in flavour - to each their own ;)
Then..... Chris arranged a little surprise! A plate was popped in front of me with a sparkler and a candle, with homemade chocolate truffles next to them. Ooooooo! Laris is famous for their truffles, they even have chocolate workshops I believe.. we saw a glass-walled room of what looked like a workshop on the way out. There were 5 precious truffles on the plate so we shared half each ;) I really only liked the plain milk chocolate one best, the others were liquer or other odd combinations (eg. one of them was White chocolate and eggnog!).
We absolutely enjoyed the dinner and it's no doubt an exquisite restaurant with brilliant service, but frankly the prices are just too exorbitant. Perhaps I'm just stingy, but I can't really justify paying that amount! No regrets we went there though, it really was a great way to celebrate a special occasion.

Arriving on the 6th floor the entrance is very nice until you enter the dining area and the awful carpet takes over. Dining out is not just about food it is also about ambiance, service. The food was excellent no doubt! But the service wasn't, no wine knowledge (bottles from 550 rmb +) and the waitress was to much present. The time between starter en maincourse 7 min. Please ask for slow diner if you have the whole evening. Or do they want you to move to the glamourbar across the street?! The menu is comparing to M on the Bund overpriced!
Bin there done that!

Had my birthday dinner here earlier this month and while the restaurant was a bit empty (Wednesday night blues?) the view and the food were excellent. Not to mention the service was on par. Excellent selection of fresh seafood that is flown in fresh everyday - even raw oysters. Interesting menu with something that is sure to please everyone.

This used to be my fav treat. The seafood is the star here and the quality is excellent. The prices are reasonable for the total package of dining experience. The meats here are unexciting and in some cases, the sauce is bland. The biggest problem is the service. It used to be good but I feel it has gone down. It is a shame because I think it should do much better. The chocolates is not worth it and it doesn't taste that good.

I took my sister to this brilliant restaurant for her birthday in May last year. We were blown away by the innovative yet delicious dishes. Definitely not cheap but worth it for spesh occasions. Hope the previous post abt it going downhill isn't true!
