This family owned bakery conjures up images of a German hamlet. The European owner is a professional baker, so his freshly baked German rye breads, Belgium waffles and raisin rolls are the real deal. Stop by with your family for brunch (they make tasty omelets and have a kid's corner); eat outside when the sun is shining.

The breakfasts are fantastic value for money, particularly if you choose the option of three bread rolls to go with your ham, eggs and cheese. Plus one smallish drink is included in the price!
The main downside is that service is slow, they are not quick to comprehend any special requirements and the food is always served cold. Which is the same problem that they have with their sister restaurant, Faith's Diner, next door.

Tristamarie: First of all they are not German! The guy is a unfriendly over weight Dutch and his wife is a Shanghainese. We live close by so we are regulars in Hongmei Pedestrian Street. We had several bad experiences with ordering hard rolls for a party, breakfast and in their shop - (hard rolls are intended to be crispy, but those were fluffy and soft like milk rolls) Orders are nearly always wrong, incomplete and late. The service in the shop for my understanding is really poor and the Shanghainese owner usually keeps a really unfriendly long face - not really nice for paying customers. In addition they took over the Moon River Diner and instead of creating something on their own, they just took over the menu - just that they don't really know how to properly prepare the food. Their German neighbour is doing their own bread too. Really tasty and worth a try (they also take orders)

My experience there has been even worse. I passed by there to order quite a big amount of fingerfood for a party. While discussing with the person in charge I mentioned the date of the party at least three times and even asked if it was not too short notice to order four days in advance. No, it was said this would not be any problem. But on the day of the party the food did not show up at the agreed time. After a while I called and was told (in a quite rude tone) to check the order form - where I saw for the first time that they had put in the wrong date, ie. one week later. I was told they could not do anyhing but to deliver the food one week later. Furious, I went to Bastiaan's where the staff admitted that they might have made a mistake when writing down the order. However, they could not do anything but give me my money back. They did not even make any attempt to help me with getting at least part of the fingerfood for the party from their stock. Nor did I hear much of an excuse from the staff. Finally, I went to another restaurant close by which was able to provide me with fingerfood for 30 people within 2 hours prior notice. For me Bastiaans has shown to be completely unreliable as a caterer, with unpolite staff showing no interest in solving a problem or keepint their customers happy. I will certainly not visit this place anymore nor recommend anyone to order food there.

I enjoy the breads at Bastiaan. We generally go to Shanghai twice per month and freeze the bread for later. It's the best in Shanghai!

Where You Eat: if you're an athletic scientist
Name: Christl Kagiyama Profession: Chemist
Seeking food in Shanghai is like traveling all over the world right in the comfort of your own bustling, smoggy (but heart-felt) city. It's not everyday you can go to Nepal, but I find myself gravitating to Nepali Kitchen for their fried cheese balls and steamed cauliflower dishes. For the ultimate trifecta (reasonable prices, all-you-can-eat and a good time), my friends and I reserve one of the back rooms (or all three!) at Gokohai Shabu Shabu. No one leaves unsatisfied with YY5 Asahi draft beers and YY88 gets you a ticket to unlimited beef piled in mountainous form. With half the staff speaking Japanese, I feel right at home. I also enjoy a calm outdoor brunch at Bastiaan Bakery on the Hongmei Lu Pedestrian Street. This German bakery makes some mean smoothies, my favorite being the Healthy Breakfast Smoothie complete with oats and honey. I pair it up with the Salmon Club sandwich and fries to get all the fuel I need for another weekend in the 'hai.

I had a terrible experience with Bastiaan Bakery. I ordered a customized birthday cake more than 1 week ago for my son's first birthday. The cake arrived hour and a half late with no one informing. Even worse, the design of the cake was totally different that what we discussed and I was there when I placed my order. I have chosen to use two cartoon characters on the cake but ended up one of them was something else. The side decoration looked very weak and terrible. It was the ugliest cake I have ever seen. It just looked like they made the cake at the last minute. They did agree to return the money for the wrong picture after I complained to them on the phone. I asked them to come at 11am the next morning to give me the money but they came at 8am instead (it's a Sunday morning!). I am very disappointed at them especially I wanted a perfect cake for my son's first big day. I will NEVER go back to them again and will NOT recommend them to anyone else.

Well, I have to make a sad revision of the previous review. We went to Bastiaan yesterday and the service was significantly worse. They didn't not seem more than averagely busy but attracting the attention of the waiters - and subsequently getting them to serve us, was not easy.
The food took almost 30 minutes to come, and when it did it was, as before, cold. The bacon had more in common with replacement insoles for running shoes than it did with actual pigs.
What was worse is that the baked beans we were served with the "Bean and Bacon" were very clearly chinese white beans in tomato-flavoured water. Now, I quite enjoy that particular meal (cold, dry toast aside) and have eaten it at least five or six times. We asked for replacement beans and they came - twenty minutes afer we had finished the meal - and they were the real deal this time. I can only imagine that this was an attempt by the management to see if they could palm off sub-standard food and get away with it. Nice try, but no bananas.
I don't think we'll be back to this place again, frankly, which is a shame, because since discovering Hongmei Lu (3 years after arriving in Shanghai) we have been regulars at Bastiaan almost every Sunday morning for the past few months. A big shame :/
