Get ready to roll your sleeves up and shout to your neighbors at this budget favorite. Waitresses will challenge your taste buds with suan dou jiao (beans sauteed with hot peppers and minced meat) and lawei hezhen (smoked meat fried with, yes, more hot peppers) and the spareribs are a must.

I went to Di Shui Dong for lunch yesterday to try its famous cumin ribs. I had a 20% off food coupon. Afterwards they told me that the coupon applied to everything EXCEPT the ribs. A blatant attempt to rip me off. So I called the company that issued the coupon, and they contacted Di Shui Dong management who said that I could go back to the restaurant to redeem the dishonoured value of the coupon. But when I went back for the money, they persisted with the line that the coupon didn't apply! Needless to say, a shouting match ensued. After getting multiple levels of management involved, it was admitted that they had tried to rip me off.

My advice to expats - save your money for restaurants that deal straight up. This place is crooked. And the ribs were not that great anyways - more gristle than meat. And the eggplant that everyone raves about was swimming in oil.

10 RMB Asahis and those orgasmic ribs. Instant 5

decor is definitely lacking and so is service. but the food is excellent for those that like to eat spicy. when i eat, i go out to eat and decor can take a back seat. it would be nice to get good service but...oh well. not cheap eats but not expensive either. remember to get the ribs!

I like Di Shui Dong a lot. Good, spicy food. It has been quite crowded during the 3 times I went there. I'd definitely recommend it. And it's not expensive.

Really can't see what the fuss is about for an overpriced, westernised place. Food was mediocre at best and with a 80-100% mark up on what the price would be at a local place.

Pork ribs are very spicy, and good. But service is poor, and it's pretty dirty.

not really as good as it is hyped up to be. maoming location is better than dongping, but still, westernized prices.

check out xiang guan restaurant on caobao/ liuzhou lu (near line 1) for better tasting and cheaper hunan specialties

Quaility of food and service is good. Waiters are nice and quick, I 'd say above than average . The ribs are loaded with spices, I guess cumin. If you not a big fan of spices, just skip this one. I was so with it, not bad, and not good.

I saw quite a few table with local brining foreigners here, may be this one is a showcase of hunan cuisine?

Not that spicy, but good food, both in quality and in price. Order the ribs (of course), even though they're kind of dry, the Bang Bang Chicken, and the Sea Bass. You're good to go.

If you want some place with better ribs, go to Gu Yi, which is up the road a bit on Fumin Lu intersecting Julu Lu.

My husband informed me that the food here isn't exactly authentic Hunan cuisine, but in my opinion it was exactly what I expect Hunan food to be: Spicy! It was also quite cheap, and we were able to sample quite a few dishes for only 75 kuai each. The pork ribs were my favorite - delicious! Also the toffee banana for dessert is an excellent choice.

We're consummate fans of spicy food and definite Di Shui Dong devotees. On a recent trip, our mouths were watering over a selection of dishes including a double serving of quite possibly the best spicy Hunan spareribs around which we devoured ravenously, leaving nothing but bone and a few wayward cumin seeds on the plate.

The food is less interesting than in South Memory or Xi Xiang Ji, but good quality, spicy and served quickly. I'd come again when in neighborhood, in spite of the soundtrack (guzheng covers of 70's chart-toppers)
