Get ready to roll your sleeves up and shout to your neighboring diners at this budget favorite. Waitresses challenge your taste buds with suan dou jiao (beans sauteed with hot peppers and minced meat) and lawei hezhen (smoked meat fried with, yes, more hot peppers). The spareribs are a must.

We're consummate fans of spicy food and definite Di Shui Dong devotees. On a recent trip, our mouths were watering over a selection of dishes including a double serving of quite possibly the best spicy Hunan spareribs around which we devoured ravenously, leaving nothing but bone and a few wayward cumin seeds on the plate.

Have to disagree with the above posts. While the atmosphere is cozy, and the service quick, the food is a pale imitation of the real deal.

Unfortunately, most dishes are bland and lack any real punch in terms of spice.

Guyi or South Memory would be better choices, with the latter being my overall favorite in terms of spice and depth of flavor.

I have been to the DongPing location twice, both times I have been rather disappointed, the menu is the same as MaoMing venue, but the taste is just not the same, sadly it's just not as spicy .

It's next to a Thai restaurant and also the Blarney Stone, the Thai is good, the Blarney Stone offers hefty meals and good beer... Let your feet do the talking !

you haters. obviously you never lived in hunan, which sucks, but luckily you're able to eat something remotely close to the real deal without the betel nut beatings going on outside. granted the maoming branch is more 'legit.' but c'mon ...and how nice not to have to hang out in xujiahui/nanjing lu/zhongshan park! goooooo di shui dong!

Hey! I don't hate it, I just don't rate it, I walk down to the MaoMing branch from Jing An, takes about 30 mins, (Dong Ping is the same walk time) then go on to someplace else, I certainly do not subscribe to the leisure industry in that area, sometimes I even head to Dong Ping for a beer and pool! BTW, my GF IS from Hunan, and cooks at home sometimes, it's good - but real hot !

A bunch of friends and I are going here for my birthday tonight. I've been to DSD many times before, and it's always been great (well, the ja zi ji could use a bit more chicken...) The ribs are my favorite! It's perfect that the Beaver is right down the road...should be a fantastic night of spicy food, booze, and friends.

have always been to the maoming lu branch but decided to give the dongping lu branch a go since i was in the neighbourhood last evening...and the verdict is...i agree with tombot! the food at the dongping lu branch just doesn't measure up to the maoming lu branch in terms of taste and spiciness...we ordered the all-time fave cumin pork ribs and it turned out bland & dry..someone must have missed out on the salt! The chef also forgotten to throw in a handful of szechuan peppercorn for the spicy chicken dish (la zhi ji ding)...overall a very disappointing dining experience! definitely not going back to this particular branch anymore...
