At this Northwest Indian restaurant, chefs serve only the real deal. Scrumptious classic renditions of chicken tikka, lobster tandoori, and a good vegetarian options (including a smoky, tumeric spiced eggplant dish and the best vegetable samosas in town!) make this venue a perennial favorite.

We have become regulars at Bukhara. Admittedly we love Indian food.
Their meat dishes are 'melt-in-the mouth' good (the top-executive of a massive European co I took there for a casual dinner recently commented that they had the best lamb chops he'd had in years - I agree). The veggy curries and breads, which is what we usually eat are always delicious. The service we found always attentive and very friendly.
However, we do think that price-wise it is priced to the expat expecting to compare to what they pay in Europe in particular - their prices could be 20% lower than they are, but I suppose you pay for what you get.

We went for the Sunday brunch last week and were reminded just why this restaurant has such a great reputation. Attentive waiters made sure we were well looked after and offered recommendations. Great choice of food and a VERY high standard makes sure we will be going back again, and again.... and again

I've been there (and other Indian restaurants around the world) several times and the food is great, and so is the ambiance.
However, last time I found a big cockroach in the steamed rice! That alone is disgusting but the reaction of the waiter even worse: no apology, no new rice. He offered a free coffee for after the dinner. I mentioned that I don't want coffee but he could write off a beer I had but he said that this wasn't possible, a free coffee was the best he could do!
We never went back. It would have been decent if they didn't let us pay anything at all, and invite us over for a free meal, to convince us their food and kitchen is clean enough to be trusted. Terrible experience!

We ate here on Monday 8/3/2009. The lighting and decor inside is very beautiful. The place was fairly full for a Monday night and there were several tables of Indian guests which lends it some authenticity. Further, the area where they cook is visbile through glass and there are mainly Indian gentleman cooking, further lending to the authenticity.
We ordered: 1. Lentil Soup with cilantro: It was pleasantly tangy and thick - very good. 30RMB 2. Murgh Tikka Masala: Spicy Chicken Curry: This was not as good as I had hoped but not bad at all. 80RMB. 3. Mutton Saag: Lamb & Spinach Curry. The lamb was excellent and tender. The spinach curry was good. 80 RMB. 4. Naan: 15 RMB. Flaky, fresh, and tasty!
With drinks and all this food for 2, dinner was 340 RMB (about $50 USD).
All major foreign credit cards are accepted.
The staff was very friendly and perfect English.

Although I have yet to try Vedas, Bukhara was a fantastic Northern Indian cuisine. The mangers and staff were very friendly and the open style window kitchen was inviting. The food was fantastic and the wine recommended was very good.
As mentioned before the price is a bit steep, however when you are looking for a nice Indian meal, this would be the place to go. I wish they had a location closer to the downtown area!

Whent on Sonday to this place and it was autentic. Service was attentiv and the portion sice more than enough for 2. A bit expensive but worth the money.

I am the lone "bad reviewer" - given that I have eatne at many fine Indian dining spots. So, here it is: When: Weeknight after work What: Splendid chicken Samosas heated to 35 (i.e not eated) - These were the kind of samosas you should get when the chef asks the question, "How can I make it uninteresting yet tasting like a samosa?" So, there is way too much potato, none of the texture and complexity I expect from one priced liek this. Did I mention it was cold? Then came sugarcane juice with ginger. This was probably heated to 35 when it should be chilled. The ginger barely there. Just when the appetizers were done , a large crowd of working guys came and sat right next to us and chatted loudly about tyheir next M&A (nothing that Bukhara can do about). Then we oredered their house biryani and vegetables, Subj Bukhara or something. Tje vegetables were over cooked, smashed up, with a pack of spices that can make even a hospital cafe look good. We asked for more chilis and some lemon. In the end, we were disappointed and I was pissed off - it was a long drive from home and it was not worth it. I prefer the smaller Delhi Zaika, even Patiala Pearl. The decor was too cheesy for me.

The best Indian food I have ever had. Ambience, service and of course the food is superb. I can't rate it highly enough.

Second Bite | Sensational Samosa
Located in Gubei on Hong Mei Lu, this venue consistently provides excellent Northwestern Indian food, comforting ambiance and service. It is no wonder that they serve the best of the best Indian fare in Shanghai. Their vegetable samosa (RMB30) is a starter must. Served almost immediately, these were the best we had ever tasted! The pastry was not too thick, perfectly deep fried but not greasy and amply filled with spiced potatoes and peas accompanied by 3 colorful sauces colorfully complemented by a minty taste, cumin, and obligatory red and hot and spicy relish. Garlic naan (RMB25) was more like a yummy Indian pizza with thin crust and hint of garlic. Murgh tandoori chicken (RMB75 for half order) was sprinkled with the chef’s special spices, perfectly roasted and tender. The mutton sudh kebab masala in brown sauce (RMB85) imparted tender, spicy and satisfying lamb flavor. Our favorite, though, was an appealing vegetarian smoky eggplant dish blended with tomatoes and onions with a hint of turmeric (RMB65) served with steamed Indian basmati rice (RMB25). It is no wonder that Bukhara is rated as a top Shanghai Indian restaurant worth many return visits. Peggy Rosen

The food is great. The seekh kabab curry is yummy though it is spicy! The service is friendly. Very nice warm decor using earth tones. The place is a bit pricey but worth the tasty curries. Definitely reccomend this place for good Indian food.

The environment is good. You don't get the fumes coming out of the open kitchen. The deco is rather cosy, with lots of earthy undertones.
The food is generally good. The papadum is big and crispy. The tandori chicken, lamb rogan gosh and the eggplant are all good, though I think they should cut back on the spice. The gula jamun's sweetness is off the scale but it has very interesting spice elements in it. I think it is a tad undercooked because the center was a tad hard and they should make the syrup a little less sweet.
Service is decent enough, though they need to be reminded a couple of times to top-up my water glass.
Prices are not cheap but reasonable for this level of quality of product.

The mood at Bukhara was warm and inviting, the staff friendly and smiling, and the food absolutely fantastic. Our sampling of chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, and a waiter recommended fish dish sent our party of four into a state of Indian bliss. And its walking distance to a plethora of great bars, making it a perfect launching point for a fun night out.

probably the best indian i've had in shanghai: the meats are tender (never dry or tough) and the taste has that complexity that results when a kitchen combines a whole plethora of spices well. ornate yet not-over-the-top interior, competent waitstaff. eat here.

Dinner for four at Bukhara Grill lived up to our expectations. The waiter gave us excellent recommendations and the food was superb. We shall definitely enjoy meals here again in the future. Highly recommended.

Bukhara is the place I go to with co workers when we have no where to go, or I plan to go when it is the last place standing on a planet where everything has been destroyed. It is also a nice place , oops, a zoo, to remind you what this animal called "Working Man" looks like. Bukhara provides a cozy enclosure for this species: cosetted, self important "Working Men" on weekdays fill this place. The food is roughly modular with vegetables and meats divided eqqually between 4-5 stock sauces: Onion/Tomato/Ginger base, green cilantro/garlic/mint and the expected dry star anise/cardomom/ cinnamon demiension. Let em be straight: Teh food is edible and enjoyable. It is, in fact, quite good. But for the location (strip mall, New Jersey, sorry Changningers!), cost (smae GDP as Guinnea Bissau), and the afore-mentioned species, it is truly a near-punishment which I, unfortunately, seek often.
