This Changning area restaurant offers affordable, classic Indian favorites. The food is so inviting, that this venue seems to be filled with feasting Indian families. We recommend the Baigan Bharta (creamy smoked eggplant) and Hara Bhara vegetable kebabs.

Dined at this restaurant last week. The food was great, though clearly underpriced compared to other Indian restaurants in shanghai. The waiter was excited about helping us, ordered chicken lollipop and papadi chaat a kind of vegetarian cold canape for me (street food they told me) recommended by him, which was very tasty and quite filling. I must tell one thing which totally floored me was an item out of the menu called chicken chilly dry (A dish very popular in India) recommended by owner of restaurant Raman. Hot Jelebi was really delicious, we had to ask for some to takeaway. Forgot to check if I left some tips;-)Overall, great atmosphere and satisfying food.

Our general experience with Indian restaurants in China has been this - That food is terribly expensive and not worth the yuans you fork out for it.
Chor Bazzar was recommended by my boss and a colleague who had a lunch there before, and they assured me it's definitely different. The place is located around 10 minutes walk from the Line 2 station of BeiXinJing. With the aid of Nokia Maps and Google Maps I reached the place, which incidently is really easy to miss and walk past.
We were four of us, all Indians and for three amongst us it was the first time in Chor Bazaar. We were seated by the Raman who rattled off a whole lot of recommendations for starters, with an advice to leave some space for the Jalebis.
As it was the first time for most of us we were a bit cautious and decided to stick with traditional food. We ordered two platter of samosas, some chicken sheik kababs with lassis and coke for appetizers; a dal, a kadai paneer (recommended by the owner - very good recommendations) and chicken tikka masala, with butter nan from heaven and Chicken Biryani (Good, nothing Exceptional) for our main course. We ordered Ras-malai and Hot Jalebis (Never had a better jalebi in a very long time) for dessert. The food arrived faster then what we expected and service was excellent.
I loved everything that we ordered, which is not what I can say about some other Indian places in Shanghai. I have had quite a few unpalatable experiences here. Chor Bazaar is completely different (For the time being). Every dish was delicious and well prepared. The quaintly was substantial enough and the freshly prepared. The Jalebis were crisply and juicy (and colourful, but I can forgive the colour, as saffaron can be impractical).
I hate the fact that food served by some of the Indian restaurants in Shanghai is stale. I also dislike the fact that the restaurants serve Indian food in small portions that disappears in two dips of nan into the curry. This was reason why I avoid eating Indian food outside in Shanghai and prefer chinese or other asian cuisine.
Chor Bazaar has managed to serve delicious Indian food at a relatively reasonable price. I will definitely go back there, for the ambience, food and the service.
PS: Jordan got it wrong, though the words literally translates to "Thieves Market" the closest meaning would be "Flea Market". Now, I have no idea why owner would want to call it that, but I admit it's catchy.

Great food, great service. I had a lot of food and the price was still very low compared to other Indian restaurants. Mutton Rogan Josh was perfect, great consistency, delicious, and the menu is very good, lots of variety. Best Indian i've had in Shanghai. The best thing was the customer service, definitely very customer focussed, and unrivalled in this city.

Chor Bazaar is not a busy little restaurant now but I am sure it will be in future,it;s easy to get a reservation but it's worth trying to have a meal here. Food is authentic Indian and very very flavouful and tastes very close to indian food made in India. some items on the menu include all types of yummy biriyani's , crispy naans in various flavours . i had the chicken tikka biryani, lamb curry, kofta curry (which was the best i have had anywhere in the world !) black lentil curry . appetisers look whimsical and every bite is a delight. menu is reasonably priced and food quantities are big in size. try the chicken lollipop with home made chilli sauce. considering Shanghai has become pricey all around ,chor bazaar is still very reasonable in their prices and offer excellent value for money. portions are good. decor is clean and very simple, warm and friendly . excellent food and quality time and time again.

Went back with another group of friends, and again Chor Bazaar did not disappoint. Great food at a great price point. I just have to mention the Chicken Lollipops, they are GREAT! A few members of my party mentioned that the food took a long time to arrive, but i guess its the price you pay for good eats.

This is a fun restaurant - good food and interesting atmosphere. I brought some of my clients from the US here and they loved it too. The food is delicious and I love mango lassi (churned yogurt) drink (one of my favorite drinks!) The best thing is that it is quite easy on pocket its very economically priced, but that doesn't stop it from being busy all the time.. This is a great restaurant to bring guests and clients to for some delicious north indian cuisine. We’d definitely go back for more tasty food.

Really sets the benchmark for Indian food. Unlike a lot of indian restaurants, the spicing is done authentically。This is the best Indian restaurant you'll eat at in Shanghai. Wonderful atmosphere, very prompt service, delicious food and great value for money. And the food is awesome. The sauces are not oily/greasy tasting. The meat in the chicken tikka masala are huge chunks perfectly cooked and not dry. The naan is always so perfectly cooked and not burnt .

I must say their food is really good too, it's the BEST Indian food I've ever had. Forget about decor or ambiance here, it's all about food here. I was thoroughly impressed with their varied breads, rice, etc to add an addition to the traditional types of Indian food they serve.
Their prices are affordable, portions are large (both me and my guest had to take a bit of our food home, as did the two tables beside ours) and food is good! What more can you ask for? Oh wait yeah perfectly made Mango Lassi! Woohoo

Satisfied my itch for some very tasty food. A group of 7 adventured out to Chor Bazzar last week only to find that it is easily accessible via the subway; taxi from Jing'an ran us ~40 RMB.
Food was solidly good. We all started with mixed plates of BBQ; very tasty. Next was a wide selection of nan and listened to the owner for main dish suggestions. We ended up with about 5 different dishes from butter chicken to lamb vindoo. Tearing off bits of nan we wiped the bowls clean.
I'm sure many of us will be back often; next time via subway.

This is very comforting food and the nan and rotis are awesome. Went there last week. The decor is rather back-country replete with hanging plastic strawberries and green leaves but in this part of the world, several longtitudes away from Delhi, who is complaining? The pani puri is 90% good. The steamed green whole lentils are missing. The food is tad greasy and I wish teher were Indian restauranst that did not use so much oil and cream. The jalebis are good but coudl do with less colour - it is rather obvious it is red food colour rather than safron. But this is carping, the food is several miles more consistently better than the expensive ones on Dagu Lu and Hongmei Lu (the Bukhara which is incredibly irritating by now). Come here not for taking a team out but taking some tuck-it-in times after or before shopping at Decathlon and Brillaince West Mall which is just next door. We plan on making this our getaway restaurant!

I ate dinner here yesterday and my mind is still boggled by how great it was.
Brian C. and I ordered Mix Kebab Platter, chicken tikka masala (spicy), Baingan bharta, aloo ghobi (spicy), a garlic naan, Plain Rice, and 2 Mango Lassi.
We were given starter that consisted of green minty sauce Indian restaurants always have. The Mix Kebab Platter was very delicious and was perfectly cooked; all the barbeque dishes were so well done that I can still remember the taste lingering on my tongue. What I immensely enjoyed was the sizzling sound of hot plate on which it was served. Chicken was very tender and gentle. The chicken tikka masala sauce was SO delicious. It was creamy and the perfect amount of spicy. At first I was a little afraid how will it taste? But when I had the first bite I could say this is one of the best Indian restaurants in town. (Anyone who knows me knows that this is a bold statement because I LOVE HOC tikka masala sauce...) Brian C. says the chicken was not dry it was juicy. Combined with the tasty garlic naan and the plain rice...PERFECT. 10
The baingan bharta (Char grilled aubergine), aloo ghobi was also very delicious. I'd like to see a little more ghobi but I have never been one to turn down some aloo. Trust me there will be future visits but this was so tasty
The portions looked good enough. Brian C. and I are HUGE eaters (we probably average 2 entrees per person) and we walked out VERY satisfied. We ordered both dishes spicy and I can barely describe how perfect the spicy was. Each time you put the food in your mouth, an explosion of flavor tantalizes your taste buds. I feel like at other Indian places, after all everything starts tasting like muted nothing. Not here. Each bite is as flavorful as the last and spiciness leaves a soft burning in your mouth that is not uncontrollable but a heated reminder of how tasty everything was.
The Mango Lassi was SO refreshing between bites of the spicy deliciousness we were eating. Also when I footed the bill it was not heavy on my wallet. WOW an economic eating joint with quality, but I'm so overall happy with this experience that I'll stick with giving them the full 5 stars.
Can't wait to come back again!

Second Bite | Bazaar But Good
Issue 5, March 11-24 2010
When we first visited Chor Bazaar, we were pleased. We’re happy to report that the second visit was no less pleasing. While slightly difficult to find, tucked away in an alley to the side of Decathlon in the Xijiao Bailian mall in Hongqiao, the trip is worth it to get authentic clay oven-fired northern Indian cuisine.
While the ambiance is not Indian baroque–it’s short on elephant gods and other knickknacks–we found the directness refreshing. The upstairs dining room is comfortable and sensitively lit, a good place for a date. The downstairs is a little more basic, but diners will be entertained by the neon sign over the bar: “Thug Bar”. Chor Bazaar means “thieves’ market”, which loosely corresponds with thuggishness, but the food prices are quite honest.
The house recommendations remain a solid bet. The chicken lollipops–deep-fried spicy sticks dipped in garlic, ginger and hot pepper oil (¥35)–are like bar food from heaven. The selection of freshly-baked breads, redolent of wood charcoal, is wider than what you’ll find at other Indian restaurants. The baingan bharta (¥32), a smokey eggplant mash, went down particularly well when slathered across the roti bread. We also liked another of their naans, the onion kulcha (¥15).
As far as carnivores are concerned, the meat is where the restaurant really stands out. In general, Indian meat is marinated and cooked without fat–and for the expat in China, it’s refreshingly boneless. Chor’s 12-hour marination process produces incredibly tender lamb dishes and a standout chicken reshmi tikka (¥45) that’s wrapped in egg then soaked in lemon and raita yogurt. This dish is quite filling, but that’s fine with us. We’ll just have to come back again to try the desert.

New Eats | Indian Appreciation
Despite the threatening name, (Chor Bazaar translates to “Thieves Market”), everything about this far-flung restaurant near Hongqiao Airport made us feel like we were stepping into an Indian home. We were quickly greeted and led up to the second floor, which was already packed with Indian families. While a Bollywood film played quietly on a projector screen, we felt immediately at ease in the uncluttered, yet characteristically Indian dining room.
After whetting our tastebuds on a very creamy mango lassi (¥25) and a refreshingly tart Nimbu Pani (¥20), an Indian lemon drink, we dug into an order of mildly flavored Hara Bhara Kebab (¥30), crunchy, deep-fried vegetable patties. The patties were perfectly cooked and not at all greasy. We were a little disappointed with the lack of meat in the mutton Rogan Josh (¥45), but the rich red curry was tasty and well-balanced–clearly seasoned by an experienced hand.
The star of the table, however, was the smoky Baigan Bharta (¥32), made from a creamy mashed charcoal-grilled eggplant flavored with an array of spices. Spooned on top of crisp chili cheese naan bread (¥20) straight from the tandoor or their fragrant cumin rice (¥15), the Baigan Bharta could easily be the best Indian dish in the city. We left with a kind goodbye from the owner and money enough to make the long cab ride back to a little less painful.
