The flavors of Indonesia grace the tables at this restaurant where lumpia goreng and otak otak are ready to satisfy. Spicy hot beef curry and chicken satays add to adventurous excursions into Indonesian fare as selections here incorporate a myriad of flavors in everything from sweet and sour and peanut sauces to chilies and curries.
The Real Indonesian Deal
The round, silvery exterior of Bali Bistro is reminiscent of a space capsule, and the interior is nondescript, yet made warm and inviting by brown and beige tones. The food here adds the spice. Influenced by many cultures thanks to the early spice traders and centuries of European colonial influence, we were excited for the myriad of colors and aromas that were soon to grace our table. We began with Lumpia Goreng (YY15 for four spring rolls) tastily stuffed with vegetables followed by Sajur Asem (YY15), a spicy sweet and sour vegetarian soup filled with cabbage, corn, peanuts, turnips and flakes of hot chilies. Intrigued by the name, we had to try the Otak Otak, a tasty fishcake grilled in banana leaves accompanied by a rich homemade peanut and sweet chili sauce. Sata Ayam (chicken satay, YY28) was grilled to perfection and also served with the requisite peanut sauce. Wiping the perspiration from our brows, we savored a traditional spicy hot Rendang (beef curry, YY48) which was in top form here, along with a pleasing Nasi Goreng (fried rice, YY30) topped with fried egg, along with two additional chicken satays covered in a yummy coconut sauce. The extensive dinner menu provides a happy dilemma when choosing your meal and inexpensive lunch rice set dishes (around YY32) are cause for a smile. The excellent food and reasonable prices contribute to a rewarding and adventurous dining experience. Bali Bistro is definitely worth a visit, make that a return visit, because we know we will. -Peggy Rosen
