While the layout may be steep, the food at this little Japanese yakitori venue is worth the climb. Three floors and two outdoor patios provide plenty of seating space for those looking to enjoy a fine selection of teppanyaki accompanied by sushi, maki, rice and noodle dishes and delicious skewers straight off the yakitori grill.
A Japanese Nook
Accented in rich, dark wood and minimalist lines, this steeply vertical nook of a restaurant offers those who love grilled meats (but hate the smell permeating their clothing) plenty of seating options--three floors and two outdoor patios, in fact. Aside from grilled meats, En also offers sashimi, maki, rice and noodle dishes and an extensive drink menu. The teppanyaki steaks--salmon (RMB35), cod (RMB45) and fois gras (locally harvested, RMB88)--were grilled to buttery perfection. The fish were plated with an artistic dollop of cold potato salad and accented with triangles of bell peppers; the soft shell crab maki (RMB30) offered four deliciously stout rolls of crispy crab and fresh lettuce. The yakitori grill fires up at 6pm and churns out piping hot skewers of chicken, pork belly and other meaty delights (RMB16-18). Dishes come out one or two at a time with long waits in between, so gather up some friends, order up a large sake and settle in for the evening--you won't be disappointed. Dan Ouyang
