This restaurant offers meals that range from the affordable to the extravagant and boasts a menu that reads like a novel of Japanese eats. Renowned for its sashimi, oysters and sushi rolls, you’ll feel bereft if you leave this place without having sampled at least one of the above.

Sl ipping of f our shoes, we entered a squeaky-clean restaurant serving almost any dish that you could conceivably c a l l " J a p a n e s e . " Af t e r a complementary steamed egg cup which, at best, could be described as watery and tasteless, we hastily sought to reward our taste buds with string beans (¥25) and crab salad (¥40), both of which fulfilled their roles as appetizers so well that we couldn't help asking for seconds. Then, we gobbled up the salmon sushi (¥60 for five pieces), thankful that fish so fresh can still be found in Shanghai. We found the soup base of our soba noodles with curry (¥50) rich and tangy, the meat oh-so-tender and the noodles sufficiently springy. Cooked bean curd in a hot pot (¥100) is also an experience not to be missed, for it may be the only time you'll ever get bean curd this smooth. It would be a shame to leave without trying the warmly stimulating plum liqueur (¥80). All meals come with fruit, coffee or ice cream, and if you happen to visit on a day when fresh oysters are available, consider yourself extremely lucky. –Jessica Ching
