The unassuming facade of this Julu Lu establishment belies the visually striking art house interior. Lead yourself down the bamboo garden path and indulge in modest portions of innovative neo-Japanese offerings of sashimi, sushi, noodles and rice dishes. Don't miss the green tea tiramisu.

Theatrical experience Worth visiting once for the theatre, but the food wasn't spectacular. Portions were tasty, but too small. The bill was painful, and I left the restaurant still hungry.

In a city where premium-grade sashimi is scant and sushi is often consumed in all-you-can-eat quantities, Shintori offers a unique Japanese dining experience and quite possibly, the best fish in town. The dimly-lit, stone walkway off Julu Lu leads into an open, bi-level dining area more characteristic of New York or London than a typical Shanghai eatery. While the 10-piece regular sushi platter comes with a hefty price tag (200RMB), the variety and quality of the nigiri makes it worth every yuan. Shintori's sushi chefs welcome guests with a resounding "irashyaimasei" and servers are attentive and pleasant throughout the meal. Try the Rock 'n' Roll Salad. Good place to go with a date. Even better to go with an expense account.

On a dim unimposing section of Julu Lu one can find what is arguably the best Japanese restaurant in Shanghai. Shintori was designed to calm the nerves but stimulate the taste buds, making any design junky or foody want to come back again and again. Every time I walk up Shintori’s signature bamboo lined walkway, I am reminded that before long I will be indulging in fresh, flavorful, and creative dishes. Shintori’s dual floor, amphatheatre-esque layout creates space perfect for either a quiet night out with a significant other or a night with good friends. The superior food created by master chefs will please the most sophisticated palate. Indulge in the freshest Sushi in the city, or try the stone bowl cooked fried rice; no need to fret when ordering though as everything on the menu is spectacular. Like a Stephen Starr created restaurant, Shintori satisfies the culinary and stylistic preferences of the world’s most sophisticated urban diners. And of course I never forget that a night at Shintori isn’t complete without a round or two at Shintori’s People 7 bar next door.
