casa 13 - should I be pissed off?
The large Spanish doors opening from a courtyard that made me wish even more that it was Autumn again was thought to be a good sign. Comfy, yet sophisticated design from the man who brought us Azul and more gave the impression that the drink I had made known I needed was going to be a good one...enter Shanghai customer service, or...so I perceived.
'Do you have a reservation'? 'Nope, sorry. We just wanted some wine and tapas and were walking by'. 'Sorry - we're fully booked.' I look around to the 10 open tables (at 9pm) and think that's a bit strange. 'You're saying there's nowhere for us to sit' inquired my friend? 'Fully booked'. 'That's ridiculous - can we speak to a manager?'. 'Wait a moment' as she looked back to the book. 'Please follow me.'
Strike one. But hey - this happens, right?
We sat, I chose the wine not at the very top of the list, but also not too close to the bottom as I was trying to give off the impression that I knew what I was doing. I ordered it and the lovely 'antipasta' selection chalked onto the board on the wall. They both came, we were both happy. Until...
'You know we don't accept credit cards, right?' asked a different girl. 'Ummmm - no, of course not. Do you take bank cards? This meal will probably be around 1000rmb and we don't carry cash'. 'No, I'm sorry. But you can walk a few blocks away to an ATM machine.'
Strike two. This shouldn't happen - what venue, who's cheapest wine runs 240 kuai, expects their customers to carry at least 10 red notes?
We put our coats back on, walk out, 2 blocks away, get the cash, even more just in case 2 bottles turns into 3 and walk the 15 minutes back to the restaurant. The large doors now seemed a bit heavier and the sound it made seemed a little annoying this time, but hey - we made it back and were ready to enjoy. Our food was laid out nicely and we had almost forgotten the debacle beforehand.
Until...
'Sorry - we seated you at the wrong table and need to move you over, is that okay?'.
No - it wasn't. But, we were too tired to even offer up more than an eyebrow raise.
...this seems to be an on-going fad in Shanghai, paying more attention to the aesthetics than the attitude.
But - should we have been pissed off?

Food is great and hearty! I also enjoy the service. The wine list is quite decent and the prices are reasonable. The portions seemed to be getting smaller and most of the vegs disappeared from the Beef Cheek. The apple and fennel side dish is excellent. If you want to die from heart attack, order the baked cheese.... The liver pate is also excellent. The main problem is the pathetic desserts. The chocolate wanton is too fried and dry. There is a lot of room to improve there.

Jazzy tunes and gently lighting in an elegant yet cozy scene set the mood at this restaurant. Start with some wine, then a plate of the delicious salmon carpaccio, the eggplant and mint dip, and the tomato salad with aged balsamic. I'm a fan of the mashed potatoes, and the calamari is some of the best you'll find in the city. Get the charcuterie board and split it with a friend if you're in the mood for some great pate, prosciutto, baby mozzarella and a few other treats. The apple and fennel salad is another unique one worth trying.

Just went back last nite. The menu has changed quite a bit with lots of additions. The potstickers is a surprising delight and the warm cheese is still a treat. Get an apple & fennel salad to share. The ossobucco is well done and the dessert.... You gotta try the mango souffle! It is light and refreshing, especially with the passion fruit sauce.

Food has never been in question - but if such a gorgeous place still can't accept bank/credit cards, it makes it appear fly-by-night.
Is this still going on, cash only? Cause the only other place that does that in town is Window's.

Food is good, prices high, portions small and service in need of a top to bottom overhaul. No shortage of staff, just service. Appears westerners are its target market, meaning the service needs to be: less rude, more attentive, capable of dealing with a full house and less preoccupied with mundane chores rather than the customers. Waited for 10 minutes to give our drink order, waited longer for the menus. Drinks were not refreshed and asked twice for the dessert menu. Then had a battle to use our Enjoy card (if you don't want to honor it, don't display it in the foyer). The space saves the place.

Gorgeous space with great, classy decor. The food is delicious and perfect for sharing--don't miss the pate as a starter! Or, better yet, round up a group of friends, sit out on the terrace and devour the Charcuterie Board over glasses of sangria. Oh, what a night.
