City Weekend Review

A Three-in-One Bistro

Located on the southern end of the Tongren Lu bar strip, Tasca, the new 24-hour restaurant, unites drinks from Studio 78 and Mexican food from Taco Popo with new Mediterranean dishes from Tasca all under the same roof. The concept is interesting but the focus is unclear: sandwiches, soups, pizza, burgers and salads populate the menu with a few paellas but not enough to a well-rounded selection of Mediterranean fare. We ordered half of pitcher of sangria (YY100) from the Studio 78 drink list which was cool and very fruity, followed by the only red wine available by the glass (YY38, white also available) which were both drinkable. Our Calamares a la Romana (YY45) served with wasabi-flavored mayonnaise was not too oily and pleasant to the taste. The Scallop with Mango Salsa (YY45) was well-seared and tender and a twist of chives and lemon provided a good refreshing bite for the palate. The Tasca Kingdom Beef Burger (YY80) was big, juicy and very tasty and was served with lots of fries--nearly too much unless you share the dish. Our Seafood Paella (YY98) never arrived which turned out to be quite a relief since, by the time we finished the burger, we were already full. Portions are generous and the atmosphere was enjoyable. With background music from Studio 78, dim lighting and high tables, Tasca emulates a lounge setting ideal for a casual one-on-one or group dining. Just expect to hear the music cranked up a little louder around nine o'clock. It may not be fine dining, but the fare is decent, reasonably priced and unpretentious making this one of the best places in the neighborhood to satisfy a 24-hour craving. --Kim-Tien Huynh
