The sombrero marks the spot at this restaurant. While it's a little out of the way, their delicious hand-made tacos, sopes and gorditas make the sojourn worth it. Unbelievably low prices make feasting (read: gorging) easy on the wallet and, frankly, you won't be able to help yourself. The restaurant is a little out of the way, but if you're really jonesing, you can also order delivery from their delivery spot in Xuhui.

i ordered delivery from here and was a bit disappointed, but am told i need to try eating there. the flavors weren't far off, but maybe it was the fact that the food was already limp and cold when it got to me.
the prices are real cheap, but i don't mind paying for authenticity and great food.
only problem is that it's way out in the boonies. i'll get my lazy ass out there one day and try everything again.

Maybe not the best in the world but very decent taste and probably the best in china.

Hola! I have eaten mexican food outside Mexico in many places but this is definitely one of the best, of course my mother's food and the tortillas she send to me from Mexico are better but The food is very good, the sauces are good, the barbacoa tacos and chicharron gorditas, for delivery really recommend Chilaquiles... the prices are good specially in Shanghai where foreign food is expensive and not always you get in other places what you pay for, some of the best is the rice and the veggie soup.
Just as a comment fried chicken is the same all over the world just fried chicken, try some mexican genuine dishes ;-)

This place is not good. I live with Mexican girls and I could have stayed home and eaten with them. The food is edible, but bland. Spicy salsa really salty and the other three salsas had no flavor. The prices are reasonable but the portions are meager. Really out of the way, but the manager was nice. Most main courses come with the burrito or taco plus 5 chips; no rice and beans. My fried chicken burrito tasted like a Wendy's snack pack.

just because its cheap doesn't mean its good and less can be expected. Enchiladas dry and bland. Nachos stale and lacking. Salsa bar empty, practically. great reviews here, i have been up to yangpu twice now. and this has been my experience. would love some GOOD, cheap mexican food in shanghai.

-
Not bad at all! I've been to Spain & Mexico so perhaps my standards are higher than average but this place didn't disappoint.

awesome awesome awesome.
why aren't there more places like this in shanghai?
foreign restaurant owners around town, go to this place and take some notes. running a restaurant doesnt have to be that complicated, or expensive.
this is how you do it.
full marks.

thumbs up for this place, reasonable prices, the food taste good, the tacos and burritos are good, the burritos are not huge size but one big is enough,. they serve mexican food not texmex.
hope they open a restaurant near downtown. the delivery is good but a restaurant will be better.

-
It's not tex-mex, fresh-mex or american-mex, this is real Mexican. Ordered delivery again last night and you get a real bang-for-your-buck, spend 103 rmb for 2 entrees + 4 taco's. Green Chili Chicken and Enchiladas were great.

There is no doubt El Mexicano is worth looking into if one is in Shanghai — either heading all the way to the north end of Yangpu, or via the restaurant's delivery service. It is an unassuming setup in the restaurant, one large room with more than half-a-dozen tables for patrons. The menu is simple and straightforward. The food hits the spot.
I have trouble going so far as to say this is the best Mexican restaurant in the city, particularly when you've got the likes of Cantina Agave and Taco Loco to compete with. But for the most bang-for-your buck, El Mexicano might just be at the top of the list.

Had chicken enchillada, the flour tortilla was excellent and the hot sauce is fantastic. But the chicken was a bit dry and all the filling was right in the middle so the edges was just plain tortilla. Burrito was pretty good. Would order again for sure.

i knew about this place because this guy gave me a delivery menu of this place in the subway. but has become my favorite home dinning place. Now they have a promotion at their website for free delivery :) try their melt cheese with chorizo, ill kill for it. best mexican in town

so, finally made it out to yangpu for some cheap mexican food, and from what i read hear i was expecting good things. well, to be honest it was fair. nachos were good, not crisp and oily but good. burrito and enchiladas not so good. service was none. not worth the trip! but if i was up that way. that's a different story.

Frankly, I don't know much about mexican food, but, what I could say at least is that I love the food in El Mexicano. I've been there few times recently, the food and service were always good. Because of the location of restaurant, I tried more times from their delivery center than the restaurant, 'cause I live near Hongqiao area. Not to mention the food and the service, the price is also, really, really nice! Thank God I Found El Mexicano in Shanghai!!

Hola! I am not from America... and hardly try Mexican food till I live in Shanghai a year ago. Never thought anything special about mexican food until I tasted el mexicano... ! Will be back for nachos - but maybe on the delivery service... coz it is too far from where i live.
-
-
I completely can't remember how far the walk from the train station was when I actually reached there and was greeted by a hospitable owner. The food is great!!!! And at that pricing point I think is worth sharing a cab with a couple of friends to eat there...
Now they have a delivery service too so I am very happy and I can see myself ordering Mexican food for dinner. yummy!

i had been in shanghai for three months as a mexican me and my wife were looking for mexican or at least tex-mex. we have had try some places and were just ok, but then a friend told us about this place, went there and ordered chilaquiles and enchiladas verdes, of course is not cali-mexican food but is the closest thing to mexican food we have found out of mexico, we are happy el mexicano is in shanghai. gracias el mexicano

A really Chinese-ee take on Cali-Mexican food (sorry kids, burritos aren't actually Mexican food). The horchata and Jamaica are pretty good, the tostada is decent, and the rest of the menu ranges between middling and very, very middling, with a whole lot of rice. I hold the nachos in particular contempt.
OK the price isn't terrible so it might be worth giving it a try, and if I lived next door I'd probably eat there plenty. However the restaurant is WAY THE HELL OUT THERE, so unless you live near Fudan University there's just no way it's worth the time.

went there for dinnner after my exams last monday. i had chicken wings and green curry burrito. the wings are too sour and the green curry is not spicy when they have 2 stars for spiciness. their interiors look like fast food restaurant's. not a bad place afterall.

the food is amazing. the service is just ok, the location not good, but worth going, i live in jing an but i go at least once a week. nicky you sound like piece of work, you should take thing more easy , the place is not that far. ok, if you come from hangzhou it is. hehe. i can bet the food is better than other places. i have met the owner and he is mexican, actually two mexicans.before have you eat mexican food, or jut frozen mexican food? hehe. cheers

To be honest my experience was totally different. For sure the best Mexican food in town, no doubt about it.

I and two of my friends went there on Sunday and they have RMB 68 buffet which covers everything on the menu.
The nachos were dry and lack of cheese/beans. Quesadillas was okay’ish but I had high expectation as the owner looked like Mexican. The chicken wings were good but for me it will be good (or great) only with good dips. Burritos were again dry.
The only thing I liked was the drink it was red’ish, a bit sweet/sour. Don’t remember the name but it was recommended on the menu.
It was quite far from down town and we paid 58 rmb for one-way taxi. I don’t think I will go there again. Talking about quesadillas, I love the ones at Munchies a lot better.

Good eats for the price. Green Chile enchiladas stood out from the different food we samples. Overall a very pleasant experience. I would stay away from the Tortas, the bread had that sweet fake butter Chinese bread taste.
-
-
Had the beef and chicken burritos last night. Totally good. The chips, while small, were crispy/crunchy. Our order came with tons of refried beans and salsa for dipping. My mexican friend swears this is the best mexican food in shanghai.

ii never been at the restaurant but in the office we order at least twice a week. yummi.......

i have been to this place three times, the first time was july last year, and i have to say was nothing special, the second time was few months after that and was much better, the third time was yesterday and they had this weekend buffet all you can eat for 79 RMB. everything that i tried was really good. i couldnt try it all but i can recommend The mushroom quesadilla, spicy pork burrito, melt cheese with chorizo, pork leg torta, the rice drink. they have also guacamole but sadly is not included in the buffet promotion but i remember that i paid around 10 rmb for a plate of guacamole. Is not a fancy place, but the atmosphere is really nice, is a good place to go with your friends and have good foreign food for a really acceptable(cheap) price.

Back in the U.S. now (San Diego to be specific). Being from San Diego and having had access to really good Mexican food (and really bad ones too), I gotta say, during the six months in Shanghai, El Mexicano was the closest to "home" in a long time. Don't know about now, but I highly recommend this place (based on past experience)

So I've now been there twice. Once a couple of months ago and once a week ago. The prices have gone up since the first time, but it's still reasonable. The place has a fast food restaurant feel. The food is a mixed bag. I'll just describe what I've tasted.
Sopes: outstanding, 3 little ones, now up to 15 kuai, but still more than worth the money. The taste from using real fresh masa de maíz was great and the toppings were tasty. With a little help from the salsa bar, I could eat several orders. Tacos: nice that they have freshly made corn tortillas, just wish they were better made. Fillings were nothing to write home about. Enchiladas verdes: Decent, especially since I haven't had this dish in a long time. Burrito: Good, solid. But again, beef filling was a little bland. Spicy pork dish: Now this is were things really fell apart for me. I was expecting a pork chile rojo kind of dish. What I got was something that tasted like mediocre Chinese food, with a huge serving of rice. That was a major disappointment. I understand if they're trying to adjust to Chinese tastes, but maybe a warning on some of their dishes would be in order for those of us that want to eat Mexican food. Or, you know, a section clearly labelled "Chinese Food." Gordita, with chicharrón: No good. Soft chicharron? Basically soft fat in the gordita, like some sort of Chinese sandwich. Thinking about it doesn't make me hungry. However I would be interested in trying the chorizo and potato.
I straight up didn't like the rice either time I went.
Salsa bar is nice, but didn't really love any of them. None had that intense flavor of a freshly made Mexican salsa, except the pico de gallo, and even that seemed a little bland. They seem to have some sort of partnership with La Costeña, so maybe that's what I was tasting. A major plus is that they have horchata. But that must be popular because they had alreay run out of it last time I was there. It's too far a hike for me to be disappointed like that.

Yes we do, but take us like an hour to get there. What some people from jinqiao and thum plaza area have been doing is order couple hours before so they can get their meal on time.

There's few options for Mexican food in Shanghai that will get you through the day but this place is in a league of their own. They have incredible food; authentic to the point where if you're not from Mexico, you might not recognize more several dishes. And they strive to keep things cheap which unfortunately means no guacamole, but at 8rmb for a taco, the salsa bar is more than enough to complete their excellent, excellent menu. They've just opened their downtown delivery service so the non-hardcore can still get their chorizo on.

This is, hands down (and up, and sideways, and perpendicular, don't forget diagonal, also rotating in a clock-wise fashion) the best Mexican resty in the WORLD!!! No, but it's awesome, trust me. Hecka cheap, fantastic food and even (brace yourselves) horchata! You can get a big plate of enchiladas for, like 25 Yuan! They even have a salsa bar!!!! How many exclamation marks can one use in a review? I don't know, but this place deserves it!!!

Great mexican food and great prices. They make their own corn tortillas and have horchata! They deliver too (very quickly in xuhui too).
