If the name doesn't immediately denote minimalism, then the menu should. But what the owner does at his easy-to-miss burrito stand hidden on Taikang Lu is make big burritos--and make them well. The size of a grown man's foot and coming in varieties of veggie (YY38), beef (YY40), chicken (YY45) fish and, erm, turkey (YY48), these burritos have found their niche quite nicely amidst the throngs of over-priced coffee. We went back three times to taste the taco salad (YY20), nachos (YY38) and chili cheese fries (YY30), but couldn't bring ourselves to order anything but the signature burritos. Replace the movie-theater cheese and make the staff not paint their nails whilst working and you have yourself a goldmine. Offer up late-night delivery and you're looking at expanding all over town. --Aric S. Queen

This very small stand in the back lanes of Taikang Lu whips up the over-sized burritos that Americans live for. Prices should appeal to everyone. Two fish tacos will set you back RMB 38, while a large burrito covered in kraft cheese sauce (yuck, they need new cheese), jalapeños, sour cream and black beans (throw in some chicken, beef, turkey or vegetables, if you like) costs RMB 45. Don't come expecting to sit, as it's all take away good.

I was excited to find what rumour had it was a genuine mexican place, especially with black beans and vegetarian burritos available. So much that I made a friend meet me for a takeaway dinner date on Wednesday night. We arrived at Togo at about 8:15pm and there were no staff. We asked all the nearby places and they had no idea where the staff were. The manager at Origin was really friendly, but sadly it was mexican I was craving, not healthy food. We continued circling the lanes in the hope that a staff member would surface. At 8:30 the staff turned up and closed the store. No burritos to be had.

Craving still highly intact I returned on Sunday for a burrito lunch. At 12:30 again there were no staff, and again the surrounding restaurants were friendly but had no idea where the staff were.. one suggested she had gone for food - I found this odd at lunchtime as that would be a main business time. A couple of other groups also walked past pausing at the stall obviously looking to quell their cravings. After 15minutes I was completely fed up, and left a note that I thought this was a business aiming to sell burritos, but due to the lack of staff I must have been mistaken. I also left my phone number, which they called back. Thankfully I was in the area so I returned for my much needed burrito. A good burrito could excuse the worst service.....

My mouth was watering, even with the highly disgruntled staff. I guess serving customers is not what she expected at a burrito stall.

One vegetarian burrito.

It would have stopped all my complaints, and there would be no need for my review. They called me back, there were staff, albeit unhappy to have a customer...

And then...

I took a bite...

And it was BEEF!

I hadn't eaten meat for 18 years.

Good bye TOGO. Hello Peter's Tex Mex, where they did everything they could to ensure I had a delicious vegetarian burrito, even though it wasn't a menu option. And Origins - I promise to stop by soon.
