Ducking Good Pizza at Pizza Marzano
Posted on Aug 24 2010
There are tons of pizza options in Shanghai, from the gourmet pies at Issimo to the wood oven delights of La Strada to the internationally standard pies at Pizza Hut. But because everyone has their favorite topping combinations from their favorite shop, few restaurants here are really adventurous with their pizzas. That’s why it’s such a breath of fresh air when someone can come up with a unique new pie that is also tasty. Pizza Marzano’s Peking duck pizza (RMB95) is one great example. Topped simply with oven-baked chunks of Peking duck and a sprinkling of spring onions, it switches out the usual tomato sauce for an unsweetened Hoisin sauce base. The Peking duck pancake tastes fantastically similar to authentic Beijing kao ya, and, besides, there’s no bad time for duck, the bacon of poultry. Best of all, RMB5 from each pizza goes towards the Chi Heng Foundation, a charity that provides education and vocational training to Chinese kids whose parents have died of AIDS. So head over and enjoy this pie–both your stomach and the world will be better off for it.
