Lao Longtang's relatively new Novel City branch is packed with well-heeled residents of the neighboring compound. Clearly the emphasis is on sleek interior and disciplined servers, for among five dishes we ordered none were mesmerizing. Stir-fried fish with peppers (Y28) from the Sichuan page of the menu arrived submerged in lukewarm non-spicy oil; dipping its pieces in karaway oil with balsamic vinegar felt excessive, but the flavor improved. Nothing bad can be said about the tastes or textures of eggplant in clay pot (Y20) and braised duck (Y48); they were proper. But we've had tastier Shanghai stir-fried noodle (Y22) in more humble environments. Mustard greens in soy sauce (Y18) arrived the last and were unremarkable. Right now, the decor and presentation promise more that this kitchen can provide; hopefully, with time they'll get it all together.
