City Weekend Says

This Spanish restaurant in the 1933 complex serves up a range of modern and traditional Spanish tapas. Chose from dishes like creamy carrot soup, tender octopus salad to steamed seabass and garlic shrimp. Expect a dramatic space and interesting offerings.

Contributor Description

The atmosphere is very relaxed with attentive service staff. Highly recommend the pumpkin soup (rich, creamy and flavorful with shaved manchego cheese!) and the paella (large portions and very satisfying). All of the seafood was very fresh and the tapas are the perfect size for sharing with some good wine. Enjoy!

City Weekend Review

New Eats | Affordable But Bland

The design of this new tapas joint in the architecturally stunning 1933 complex, from the cave-like exterior to the stylish orange-themed interior and inventive copper curtains, raised our hopes for a delicious, modern Spanish meal. The lively Spanish music and a spacious dining room suggested that this venue could become a staple for birthdays or going-away parties.

Unfortunately, the inconsistent food soon explained the lack of customers. After ordering a glass of the palatable house wine (¥48), we dug into their affordable ¥98 six tapas set menu. While there were a few star items, such as a spectacularly creamy warm carrot soup and a perfectly balanced and very tender octopus salad, a lack of seasoning and poorly executed cooking ruined the other dishes.

An oversteamed and lackluster sea bass was drizzled with bland olive oil and virtually unsalted. The “extra spicy” garlic shrimps lacked both spice and a garlicky essence. Our clams cooked in beer, though served in a generous portion, relied on a watery and flavorless sauce studded impotently with raw bits of ginger for flavor.

We were pleased, however, with the hearty tortilla omelet, a firm Spanish-style omelet filled with soft, spiced potatoes. The dish was a comforting but simple addition to our table. Our final dish of the night was again disappointing–a dangerously bright pink and completely unseasoned pork tenderloin accompanied by a surprisingly tasty medley of mushrooms and, thankfully, a few slices of salty Serrano ham. The side turned out to be much better than the entrée.

In addition, an overbearing waiter caused far too many interruptions in the meal and left us feeling rushed. In general, the ample portions and affordable prices are there–but we felt the cooking was just not up to par. If El Toro can turn out a more consistent menu, we guarantee they'll get more people through the door. The potentially fun vibe, replete with Cuban cigars and a stage for performances, might still give it a chance for success.
