Mobster chic with deep reds and dark woods, high ceilings and white tablecloths, this prime rib destination is "steaking" its claim on the Xintiandi strip. Feast on two-inch steaks wheeled to your table and cut from the stainless steel prime rib station as you enjoy a multitude of side dishes--if you can find room for them on the plate, that is.

A couple friends and I went to Lawry's. We all had the (traditional) Lawry's cut, with their accompanying sides. We ordered a bottle of wine (one of their least expensive). It was about 650RMB per person total.
The prime rib was very good. High quality and a large portion. We all ordered medium-rare and they actually brought it medium-rare. This was somewhat of a surprise because experience in Shanghai tells you that ordering medium-rare runs the risk of getting a raw piece of meat. They even brought an extra bone for my friend who complained that he didn't get a bone.
The sides were ok. The mashed potatoes could have been more chunky. They tasted a little like a mix; same with the gravy. The salad was good. The yorkshire pudding ... well, how can you get too excited one way or the other? It was fine.
Service was good. No complaints.
Overall, a good experience. You have to want to splurge, but (unlike some of the expensive steak places in Shanghai) Lawry's delivered.

I can't believe it's real Lawry's. As the service is very poor. The bread weren't same as we had in other Lawry's. We've been to Lawry's in SG, HK and USA. The service is excellent in Lawry's. We went to SHA Lawry's this evening and wanted to have table in nosmoking area. When we just had the soup and wine, we found someone of next table was smoking. And smell was very strong. We had to asked waiters to change the table for us. But she suggested us to change the table in smoking area. Although they have other table in nosmoking area. We asked to use the table in nosmoking. But they refused. We have to stop the dinner and pay the bill although we just tast the wine.
The fine dinning is not just a show!

Lawry's Steaks Its Claim
Nothing says Monday night like a trip to Xintiandi to sample the menu at a new luxury prime rib restaurant. Shanghai is the newest Asian venture for this U.S. import and the decor was what you would expect from a steakhouse--mobster chic with deep reds and dark woods, large banquet ceilings and white tablecloths. We ordered the Lawry Cut (YY460), the most popular dish, and were floored by the size of the meat portion--two inches thick, covering the entire plate, impressive in both size and taste (the smallest cut, the California Cut, is YY335). Traditional steak sides, such as creamed spinach, asparagus and creamed corn, are ordered a la carte for YY45. Prime rib meals are wheeled to your table, cut from the patented Lawry's large stainless steel prime rib station, and are accompanied by their spinning salad (mixed table side and dressed in an upscale version of Thousand Island dressing), Yorkshire pudding and a lonesome scoop of mashed potatoes and gravy. Expensive cocktails range in price, beers are YY55 and Lawry's own label house wine is YY68 per glass. Or, you can choose a bottle of wine from a selection priced from YY330 to upwards of YY1,200. Service was prompt, efficient and knowledgeable but sadly, the pomp atmosphere is punctuated by the obtrusive thump of bass music emanating from the club next door--very disagreeable. The only problem with the "best prime rib in the world" is that, like most meals in Xintiandi, "the best" comes with a hefty price tag. --K.C.
