This unpretentious eatery is always mobbed. Though the decor is a tad 1970s, the food remains evergreen with just the right combination of nutrition and taste. Indulge in the sweet cruellers stuffed with shrimp and then lessen your guilt with vegetarian lettuce wraps, poached vegetables and Taiwanese tofu.

Food that's usually good and satisfying. A dependable place for a meal. Decent staff. And a mean hot chocolate. The pearl milk tea is great too, though not consistently perfect. Lovely nonetheless.

Consistently good - this is a place where you feel right at home. No fuss and fancy stuff....just downright delicious food. Everything on the menu is delicious (huge selection to chose from), served promptly and piping hot. The service is efficient and pleasant and save space for their great ice shavings and smoothies. Great as dessert. The best part is when the bill comes. Very reasonable for a good hearty chinese meal.

Hengshan Café is a favorite haunt of mine. Its décor is both comfy and luxe without being pretentious. It's also one of the only non-coffee chain places which does soy milk coffee and smoothies--my favorite is the key lime pie which is this great lime and honey combination. On the way home from a night out, you'll often find me in Charmant. They're open till 4am and serve dishes my mother used to make--perfect for sponging up a night of excess.

Decent Taiwanese food in the neighborhood. Better than Bellaggio. I ordered up a storm and there was not a single dish I didn't like.

Having a lot of dancing on my schedule, there is nothing better to recharge my batteries after a work out of salsa, bellydance or poledancing than with some tasty "energizers." One of my favorite places to relax and unwind is Origin. It's a new place on Taikang Lu and not far from the studio, so I can go there for lunch. It has a very peaceful atmosphere with the woody decor and little lights. Try the ice cream, and the crepe with Nutella. I also like Charmant. They have great Taiwanese style food. I recommend the chicken soup, it's simmered for a very long time and just bursts with flavor. Element Fresh is a bit pricey, but healthy and consistent. Go for the chicken salad or the spicy fish and the great juices.

Oh yea, their smoothies are great as well. Christopher St. Cavish over at SH recently recommended the sesame version however personally, I prefer the peanut incarnation of this treat. Definitely worth a try.

I'm always on the look-out for delicious hot chocolate to feed my admittedly overpowering addiction to cocoa and no, I don't think hot chocolate is weather specific and I plan on drinking this restaurant's hot chocolate all year round. Picture a chocolate bar being melted into a cup, with a few homemade marshmallows on top and you've got it about right. This one is thick, chocolatey, and oh-so-good. It's RMB25 well spent.

i've been a regular for a little over 2 years and the only thing that has changed is the bigger crowds that my neighborhood joint attracts. consistent, "clean-tasting" chinese with wonderfully refreshing ice desserts (a rarity in this chinese city). the vegetables with taiwanese dressing is a personal favorite.

Large variety of dishes Rich pallete of flavors; quick service. Can be crowded on weekends.

Charmant's cold Taiwanese noodles with shredded chicken, raw carrot, cucumber, and beansprouts is probably my favourite dish in Shanghai. Also tasty is their beef and onion dish, cuttlefish balls, and basil omelette.
