I really dont understand those of you who think that this place is good and authentic. It is not at all - totally overrated!

  • Food does not have real Thai authentic taste, not deep enough taste.
  • Ingredients are not fresh.
  • Portions are way too small.
  • Prices are too high.
  • Service is slow.
  • Ambience is old.

We used an Enjoy 50% off voucher and we still thought that it was a waste of money. This place is not worth it - go for other Thai restaurants in town if you want a real Thai experience.

Simply Thai has become a Shanghai institution. One of their walls in the Xintiandi branch boasts every accolade they have received within the past three years – the awards consume the entire wall. On weekdays, they offer two set lunch options. The first, for 48元, includes a main dish, a drink, and the dessert of the day. Feeling a bit indulgent, I opted for the Executive Set Lunch for 88元, which gave me a choice of an appetizer, main, and dessert. Disappointedly seeing my favorite – roasted duck in red curry – was not one of the main course options, I bargained with my waiter. I forfeited my dessert for a bowl of the Thai classic. Smart move.

Tried its Thai dessert buffet on Mon and it was absolutely fabulous and a haven for the sweet tooth! I was stuffed after dinner but couldn't resist the spread of colorful Thai desserts and fruits. There's also a chef who'll make you fresh Thai pancakes....and all for the price of only 38rmb! Seems like only this Simply Thai outlet serves this dessert buffet. Love it, love it, love it!

I enjoyed the RMB 10 dishes at their recent promotion. Funny but by any standards anywhere in the world RMb 10 a dish doesn't sound expensive to me so I dont agree to the previous guy's comments. Was at Xintiandi and the place was packed with queues and actually thought the people on duty handled things well and I was happy with RMb 10 dishes - which are same quantity as what they normally give for the full price. The sauce in plastic container didn;t bother me.......but maybe I'm not so demanding.

I would still continue to eat at Simply Thai - still one of the best thai joints in town.

Went today to try out the 10RMB/dish. Food served quickly but presentation was horrid, spring rolls were served with the sauce in the to-go container, when asked the server to give us the sauce in the regular wooden container, he said he CAN'T, then the manager LIED and said they didn't have enough wooden container. Later return with TWO wooden containers of sauce. Obviously trying to rush us off but since the service was terrible my friends and I decided to just sit around and chat.

Expensive Thai food restaurants should come with MUCH better trained staff that doesn't lie to customers, period.

Went to Simply Thai's 10th birthday promotion after seeing the ad in City Weekend as they were offering 10 dishes for only 10 yuan each! Didn't expect much from the food as it's only 10 yuan each but I was surprised that Simply Thai didn't cut back on the quantity and the food was generally delicious!I love the spicy and sour seafood salad, the spring roll crispy and the tom yum pork yummy! 5 of us only paid 150yuan for lunch and we were stuffed! Wonder if they'll have 11 dishes for 11 yuan each next year??!!

Went to their 10 kuai promotion as well this thurs. Though there were long queuing outside, which I ve expected already for such a huge deal! The items' quality s actually not cheap. I wouldnt say there was big difference between their regular dishes. We 6 ppl only spent around 200 kuai that day, including drinks even! We might def keep coming in the future. Couldnt quite agree with review below. Sorry.

Went to their 10th anniversary, where they have 10 selected dishes for 10 RMB each. Unbelievably cheap. As was to be expected with Simply Thai, it was also unbelievably bad, even for 10 RMB / dish. Dishes arrived stonecold and had clearly been prepared hours in advance. The ingredients used had also been seriously downgraded from their normal, already dubious, quality.

Satay to start and then the red curry. Yummy.

Again, service is very poor. With my office less than 2 minutes walk I no longer frequent. It usually took 30-40 minutes for our food to arrive. When you are chatting, this is not a major problem, but when this happens during lunch service also..... unacceptable.

If you want to go to Simply Thai, please pick any other location. This is done to the poor service.

I went to this Simply Thai joint 2 weekends ago for the Five-Kuai-Thai deal, and I had a feast!

I was really looking forward to sampling the pandan leaf chicken, and my favorite, the roast duck curry. However, when I arrived, the chicken was already out. Luckily, I thought to myself, all others are still aplenty. I must say, I was disappointed with the curry - it seemed the food quality sunk down with the price. There was almost no duck meat in my bowl, but all skin, and the few small pieces of duck meat were nearly inedible as they were leathery, similar to the pork I found in my fried rice vermicelli. Forget about the spring rolls; they're not even worthy of mention. I have found my new Simply Thai fave, though - the glass noodle and seafood salad. I will go back there just for that.

I also enjoyed the dessert, which tasted a lot like what we call "Maja Blanca" back home. I think it's the sago & coconut pudding mentioned above.

On Mondays there's 50% off their entire menu between 6-8pm. I am the biggest bargain hunter and stingy arse, so I'm always raring to go there every Monday ;)

We kicked off with a Pina Colada, which was spot-on and absolutely delicious. However, it had a meagre amount in a glass that was deceptive (looked large from the wide rim, but look at the bottom and you'll realise it's only a tiny amount of drink). Disappointing, because the drink was fantastic.

The Chicken Wings Stuffed with Sticky Rice was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. I liked how it was de-boned, but there were some strange crunchy bits (maybe the left the knuckle-bone bits on the sides in?) and there was so much sticky rice that I tasted zero chicken. Good if you like sticky rice, bad if you're actually expecting to taste chicken wing. The Roast Duck Curry with Pineapple had the most amazing curry gravy EVER. It was rich, thick and creamy.. and with a lovely sweet flavour. We basically had that on rice, and were quite happy with just that ;) The duck itself was average, it was not that tender and had a measly portion.

The BBQ Beef in Banana Leaf was, by far, the best dish. Thin slivers of beef rolled up and stuffed into a curl of banana leaf, then BBQ'd. The beef was so tender, and had the most lovely fragrance. Just lovely dipped in the sauce. I'd order it again, anytime.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Pandan Custard with Sticky Rice, a creamy blend of sweet pandan custard off-set with the sticky rice. It was perfection.

On some Mondays it's nearly empty, and others it's full. This time, it was pretty packed out. They had loads of waiters around the place, but service was pretty bad. It was polite and friendly, but SO incomptent! I had to ask 2-3 times for a glass of water (obviously 'forgotten' because it's free and they can't be bothered) and the food did not arrive at the same time, with the last dish arriving about 15 mins after the rest of the dishes, meaning we were nearly finished by then. Plus, when I asked for a top-up of rice, I had to wait and wait and wait until the rest of the food went cold, before it came. Strangely, whilst they have so many staff, many of them walk briskly around the restaurant (trying to look very busy) but not doing anything in particular, whilst trying to avoid diners' eyes, lest they get asked to do something. So whilst they have good food, they need to STEP UP on the service - incompetency is not an excuse.

Simply Thai is basically a fancy Thai restaurant for expats. Located in the beautiful area of Xin Tian Di, the restaurant has a courtyard area outside (defunct at the moment as it's winter and butt cold freezing) as well as 2 levels inside. It's cozy, wooden, and candle-lit inside.. despite it being the middle of the day outside. There seems to be just as many wait staff as there are patrons, so service is really prompt and attentive - always a plus! Food is also served as equally swiftly.

After perusing the massive menu, we finally whittled ourselves down to a meagre 2 dishes.. in our effort to try and eat less ;) The Green Curry was very mildly spicy with a smooth creamy texture, with a lovely blend of various vegetables. I found the chicken nice and tender, though the portion was, frankly, tiny. It's EXORBITANTLY priced at 60元 - that's basically Australian restaurant pricing! BOOHISS.

The Pandan Leaf Chicken was utterly sublime. Whilst not-so-pleasantly dripping with oil, the chicken was moist and tender, with a hint of pandan flavour. Loved the strong charcoal fragrance and the dark sauce it was served with off-set it perfectly. Both dishes went well with large amounts of white rice, which we happily munched our way through.

Dessert though, was the best best best part. My friend convinced me to get the Sago & Coconut Pudding to share with her.. as she'd read great reviews about it. She was right - it was OUTSTANDING. The sago at the bottom is basically like a jelly, not much taste.. but the creamy coconut pudding (half liquid, half solid in texture) had that wonderfully rich, sweet flavour.. paired perfect with the little corn kernels throughout the dessert. It was served with the cutest tiny little spoon to scoop it all out of the pandan leaf. Absolutely delish!!

Loved everything about it. Went during their RMB 10 promotion deal and despite the crowds and queues - eveything was handled well. Was skeptical about what we'd get for RMb 10 but it was really good. had the zing and freshness of Thai food and is comparable to the best Thai I've had in Bangkok.....hope they keep it up. The decor is nice too - upscale and felt like a fine dining sort of restaurant.

Most restaurants in Xintiandi have inflated prices and was relieved to find prices for Simply Thai are exactly the same as their other branches in town but the ambience here is definitely more upscale. Especially like their bar where we had a drink before dinner – classy. We were also shown round to their private and function rooms by a lovely lady who informed us that private parties and receptions can be booked. The food was as expected, delicious and tasted exactly the same as my other Simply Thai experiences. Kudos to the team and this Simply Thai will always be one of the places I chose if I want to entertain or impress visitors.

Fantabulous place! authentic Thai food, wonderful environment, especially the bar area gave me memorable impression. It was said Simply Thai will celebrate its 10th birthday and fesat on a range of dishes at that crazy price,RMB 10 per dish, once-in-a-lifetime, but only 15 to 17 Jan. It is a good chance to enjoy it at unbelievable price.

I found this place fairly standard, save for the price. Why you shell out 45 RMB for a Singha and 55RMB for an appetizer bewilders me. The green curry was delicious, however. I'd go back if I had money to burn and there wasn't a more authentic Thai restaurant nearby.

It has been 2 years since I last went to Simply Thai and I now remember why. On my recent return visit the waiter forgot our order when he went out for a delivery and even after asking about our order 20 minutes later nothing happened, finally 40 minutes later they admitted they had lost the order. If that wasnt enough the manager has no clue about service and to top it all the Bill was wrong. I would suggest any other Thai unless a major change is made.
