Late lunch is not my time for experiments, so I thought Mekong River can't go wrong with brisket pho and fresh spring rolls. The rolls were saved from blandness by the dipping sauce, but nothing could save that pho. Watery broth, insipid noodles and worryingly tough and flavorless meat. Predictably, taste slightly improved with application of hot sauce, but I see no reason to come here again.

I was just at Mekong and the Pho was flavorful and tasty with the noodles just cooked right. Apparently, they just brought in a new chef from Vietnam. I'm a big fan of the steamed flour rolls with meat with extra fish sauce. Yummy.

Coming from LA and having had my share of the tastiest US$5.00 Pho, when we moved to Shanghai we searched high and low for a go-to Pho place where we could indulge ourselves in a bowl of steamy hot Pho. We’ve been to over 10 Pho places in Shanghai, and our favorite by far is Mekong River. Conveniently located in Xujiahui, it’s the perfect Fri night quick bite before heading over to a movie in the Warner Cinema across the street. Since living here for the last couple years, this has been our favorite restaurant for low-key comfort food that hits the spot. Though we have our favorites on the menu, it seems that recently they’ve added in a long list of new items. We were told a new chef has arrived from Vietnam and shaken things up to give it the authentic taste we were craving, so we went this Saturday and were certainly not disappointed. Notably different is the new Pho broth which has improved substantially since about a year ago…we couldn’t quite figure out what the new secret ingredients are but this is definitely the new and improved version with new spices to add a big dash of flavor. We couldn’t stop drinking the soup even after the bowl of noodles was long gone. Other great items on the menu are the vermicelli sets with meats marinated and grilled to perfection (34rmb) a spicy beef vermicelli with tomato flavoring, and the spring rolls and fruit shakes.

The service staff is attentive and friendly and the young manager quickly saw to it that our needs were met in a timely manner – a welcome change for a Chinese establishment.

The other nice thing about this place is that it’s very reasonably priced. The two of us had spring roll appetizers to share, drinks and 2 mains for under 150rmb a couple. This place definitely tops our list for Pho to die for.

I love the new seafood soup! It's a great blend of the sweet and sour tastes, with an earthy, complex broth. Filled with an assortment of veggies and seafood like fresh shrimps and clams, it's my new favorite! I highly recommend the new and improved pho, too.

We always stop by for lunch or dinner after shopping in the Xujiahui area and find the service 100% better than your typical restaurants.

Last, but not least, like PhoLover, I really appreciate the low-moderate prices. They even have a set lunch for 38 RMB. What a deal!

Not that there are that many Vietnamese restaurants in Shanghai, but of the ones I've tried this one stands out. It was fairly priced and the service was attentive. The pho was very good, with flavorful broth, almost perfect noodles, and good quality meat. Also had a delicious shrimp dish, and the spring rolls were top notch. I'll be going back to try some of the many interesting items on the menu.
