The latest wine bar in town is already creating a bit of a buzz. No pun intended. Part bar, part lounge, part retail space, Enoteca offers a wide selection of wines from France, Chile, Argentina and South Africa with deals in the works for Italy, Australia and Spain. Here’s the best part–many of them are under ¥200 a bottle (some start at just ¥70!). For those who need an expensive bottle to justify the size of their corks, those are available as well. The owners know their wines and will offer assistance when choosing either a bottle or a glass to sample. Pair it up with a selection of cheese and tapas and you’re that much closer to heaven. Get a group together for a private sampling or wine class or just
a drop-by to savour nature’s finest. Salud! –Maria hurash

Enoteca’s house wine labeled as “Eno-Terra” is really superb and at 98rmb a bottle I don’t think it can be beat. Pair a bottle or two with a brilliant croque monsieur and you’ll feel as if you have run off to the Quartier Latin. Don’t be surprised to find a full house when you arrive though as Enoteca’s petite space is filled quickly by its loving patrons. If Enoteca’s food menu was as extensive as their wine menu I’d be willing to tack on a fifth star.

Former Jean-Georges chef Tommes has taken over the position as head chef here and is debuting a new menu soon. They're also expanding to another location not too far from Xintiandi on Taicang Lu near the Sommerset. Also, well-loved friend and sommelier Samora is heading home after a stint in Shanghai, so fans of this place should swing by soon to say good-bye :)

The tag line of a bottle of Quara Tanna (YY155), "sexy and exotic with a fine finish" caught our eye, and our palate. This Argentinian wine is a unique full blend of tanna grapes that makes an expressive red with a distinct yet subtle taste.

Apparently the French think using a full blend is against the rules, so this one is a different bent from what you might otherwise find coming from the country whose reputation for great cheese and bread is exceeded only by that of their wine. But then, we expect new and creative things from Argentina, and the French may want to take note.

NEVER AGAIN - TERRIBLE LAOBAN I agree with the previous reviews - good location, great ambience, nice wine at reasonable prices. However, I will not be going back after the unacceptable behaviour of the manager.

Time was called on our first visit, my two companions and I had already paid our bill, and we were just about to finish the last of our glasses, gather our things together and go.

However, before we could do so a man, who did not introduce himself but transpired to be the manager, came over to our table and told us to leave. Infact, "Leave. Now." were the first two, uncompromising words he said to us.

Pointing out that we were literally in the process of doing so only caused him to reiterate his demand again. This was extremely annoying.

If we were the last stragglers (we weren't - there were many tables with patrons who still had wine to drink), if it were horrendously late (it wasn't, and time had only been called ten minutes previously) or if we were drunk and unruly (we weren't, after just one bottle between three of us) or if we had just declared loudly that his mother was a pig in lipstick (we hadn't, we had just been talking quietly between ourselves for the whole evening) or been rude to his staff (we hadn't), then perhaps his attitude would have been understandable.

However, it was completely unreasonable.

This was pointed out to him, extremely politely, as was the concept of good customer service.

But the slight smirk on his face betrayed the fact he was enjoying playing the big guy. Maybe he can afford to lose a few customers (we would certainly have returned had it not been for his parting manners) for the sake of letting off steam. Maybe he was bullied as a child. Who knows? What I do know is, we shan't be going back there again.

We were leaving anyway, but his actions were completely uncalled for, and spoiled what was a very pleasant night.

So by all means, check the place out, enjoy the wine. But avoid the boss man, just in case he hasn't had the broom handle removed from his arse.

balakirev response after initial comment:
I would like to say that he [Entoteca Manager] sent me a very cordial email regarding my previous comment. Although I am still reluctant to return after the petty and confrontational manner of the manager there, I would like to give them credit for at least responding to my complaint and offering to investigate the matter further.
