I came for a wine tasting event, and had a fantastic time. The tasting was very informative and they didn't make you feel like an idiot for not knowing a lot about wine or asking a lot of questions which is great. I quite like the tasting "machines" they use. You can buy a single pour, or more depending on your tastes and it allows you to sample everything from less pricey wines to more expensive wines. I just wish it wasn't out in Hongqiao!

By the Glass
The premise behind this remotely-located "wine gallery" is ambitious: combine top-quality spirits and some eye candy (of the cultural variety) and the high-class contingent of Shanghai will come a-runnin'. The realization of the concept is, however, a bit less than one might imagine. The entire venue, a long room with high ceilings, is bisected by a sitting area and a drinking station encompassing six automatic wine tasting machines, each with four to six bottles, that allow you to peruse a selection of forty wines. Who hasn't wanted to try three or four selections before settling on a glass? But the impersonal, mechanized delivery method destroys some of the magic of the wine-drinking ritual. The service is earnest and attentive (we were the only people there) and the food selection is meager (two sandwiches, two salads, a filet and an overpriced cheese platter) but the YY50 panini we ordered was tasty as was the YY50 garden salad. The prices of wines varied (as elsewhere) and started at YY10 for a taste to YY30 for a half-glass and YY60 for a full glass. Bottles are also available. Vino Venue could be a suitable site for corporate events or receptions, but there are myriad better options for a glass of red in this town. --Lisa Weir
