City Weekend Review is strange. I have been in Shanghai for many years, so I know....

Art Scene Warehouse was one of the founding galleries at 50 Moganshan Road (M50). And it is probably the biggest gallery, too. They were the first gallery at M50 to be open full-time. Being such a big space, Art Scene was able to hold big exhibitions, some with 20+ artists. It's because of this that I've heard people say that they are "like a museum". Such big shows attracted many visitors to the gallery and the Moganshan Rd area. Also, Art Scene put on some big events in their space - I remember a fashion show, some corporate events like Nokia and BMW. That also helped make the Moganshan Rd area into a "cool" area. Other galleries followed Art Scene to M50 much later, taking advantage of Art Scene's clientele.

What I like about Art Scene Warehouse is that they consistently show decent quality art. Maybe not all of it is my taste, but you can see that the artwork has some skill or talent behind it. Art Scene shows mainly painting, sculpture and photography. For the past few years they have setup the Chinese Art Prize - which is essentially an art competition aimed at "discovering" the next generation of top Chinese emerging artists. However, they also show some big names - including one of my favorites Hung Liu :-). She's one of the biggest Chinese artists globally, showing in and collected by many of the world's top art museums: The Whitney, Smithsonian, San Francisco MoMA, Asian Art Museum etc. Art Scene also launched and continues to show very famouns Chinese artists like Zhong Biao, Xue Jiye (I like his work, too), Cai Zhisong and Du Xinjian.
