I need help for a list of good public hospitals in Shanghai that are good and over-charging the foreigner.

I hope to get hold of growth hormones for my son on long term basis. There is no generic growth hormones in Singapore, and I have to buy branded one which is killing me softly.

Any help to link me up with hospitals &.or endocrinologist will be appreciated.

I just went to this hospital and it was just fine, just Chinese. I asked about the laowai department, but after hearing it's 500 kuai went to the local side and paid a whopping 15,5 kuai. I saw two doctors at the local side, both spoke fluent english (and were kinda good looking too : ). The first doc prescribed me some medicine and sent me for a biopsy, where I met another doctor and booked time for it. The biopsy and the medicine together cost me 203 kuai. The other doc did explain me that all the papers I need to sign and the results will be in Chinese, so I should have someone with me cuz even if I speak chinese I won't undestand much when the old doctors clear the results with me in Chinese. So even if there is a communication issue, they were honest about it. The other staff of course don't speak english but just howering around showing your papers will eventually take you where you're going. The place is crowded, my waiting ticket thingy had number 3998, and they were working on number 3200 at the time. That was around noon, a nurse told me that I can wait or come back around 3:30 pm. That was a good tip, I went back home and checked on some herbs while seeing what the internet has to offer me : ) I got back to the hospital at 3:30, they were on number 4100, so I missed my turn. I showed my number to a nurse, she just told me to go right in to see the doc. People were a bit curious, popping in the doc's room while me in there, or just opening the room to see in. That was a bit annoying but I just kept closing the door which took care of it for the next minute. So, all and all this was an alright place, things worked in a chinese way and I got what I wanted. At the local side I got my registration fee, medicing and the next procedure for less than half of the laowai fee. If you speak chinese, head to the local side. If you don't, try your luck there first, maybe you'll get a doc that speaks english.

Had a terrible experience this week! I had a problem with my skin and was thinking a doctor who can speak english would be better. After the doctor saw the affected area, she just said I should go to another doctor at the local section. I spent no more than 2 mins in her room and I was asked to pay 500rmb . I told them give me the breakdown of expenses. Registration fee, blood pressure, and doctor's fee and I won't pay for the doctor's fee. But they insisted. I called a doctor friend of another hospital. He said they must transfer the charges to the next doctor since she was not able to help me.Then I don't have to pay the next doctor. So I told them that and they said it is a different department. I can't believe I paid the doctor who can't even speak good english for a 2min chat! They asked me if I want them to accompany me to the local doctor. It would be faster and I don't have to wait. I asked how much, they said around 3000rmb! I went to the local dept by myself and i just paid 100rmb! I don't think it is an international hospital! It's worst than the local department. You are paying triple just for the environment but service sucks!

Yes, rubbish place. Avoid if possible. I saw the famous Dr Chen abut a knee injury that was causing me pain and preventing me from doing sports such as cycling and yoga. His conclusion was that I shouldn't worry about doing yoga and take up golf instead. Great! I'm 27 and confined to doing a rich old man's sport for the rest of my life. Also the MRI scan I paid a fortune for came back with a report in Chinese (which I didn't undertand) and Mr Chen couldn't translate it for me ... so why did I bother to go to an international hospital in the first place?? Grrrrrr.

..wah - several minutes later - I cannot believe this place. After being foisted off, put on hold, given wrong numbers for about 30mins in total, I finally get through to someone who is so damn rude, I can't quite believe it. Modern and international - I don't think so. I asked for an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon my friend had recommended, called Dr Chen. The receptionist then commenced arguing with me about which one., interrupting me, talking over me and just being damn aggressive. I know - Chen is a common name - so I asked her how many orthopaedic surgeons there were - and she said several. OK - so do you have one called Chen? And then we just kept going round and round in circles. Finally, I said - OK - any orthopaedic surgeon is fine - just any. So then suddenly she cannot book me an appointment cos all the doctors have "gone home" - at a place where the hours are listed as 8am - 10pm. Sigh. Ok - so - can I book an appointment for Monday anyway? No - Dr Chen (who has suddenly materialised) is away on business and his phone is off.... er - right...And so on. I tell you what - I have had it up to HERE with crap service and just plain rudeness from places that tout themselves as professional, international, modern etc. etc. What a load of bollocks. All I want is a second opinion on whether I need knee surgery or not - something about which I am stressed already without being treated rudely by a receptionist. Sigh.

I just wish they'd answer the phone - all the stuff about international standards of health care blah blah blah blah - have not been overly impressed by them at all. Quick in, quick out and lots of medicine at the end and a big bill. Hmmm....

I have had mixed experiences at this clinic. The first time I went I had a female doctor with limited English. Luckily, I had a native Chinese speaker with me and the doctor's manner was caring and she patiently answered questions. I was told if the problem persisted to make another appointment with a specialist. For this consultation I paid 500 RMB inclusive of the first visit registration fee.

A couple of weeks later I made an appointment with a specialist. When I made the appointment, I specifically requested a doctor who could discuss my medical problem with me in English.

When I went to the appointment the doctor could not speak any English and had brought a female assistant (who I believe was his student) to act as a translator. He asked minimal questions in Shanghai dialect to the assistant and then she struggled to ask me the questions in English. I felt like I was a guinea pig for the assistant’s training and English practice. The doctor seemed indifferent and even answered his mobile phone during the consultation.

After a brief examination I was told to have an ultrasound. When I asked how much it would cost, his answer in Chinese was 200 RMB but then the assistant went to check and came back to tell me that it would cost 900 RMB. Actually, the 200 RMB price is for an ultrasound in the local section. I asked if I could go to the local section rather than have it done in the clinic. I was told I could, but I would then have to make another appointment costing a further 300 RMB for the doctor to view the results, as he would not wait for me to return from the local section. The doctor, his assistant, a nurse and a cashier who were by this time, all in the room then proceeded to discuss the issue in Shanghai dialect and try to bully me into paying the 900 RMB.

The attitude of the staff in this clinic seems to be that patients pay for the nice environment rather than for the extra services (ie: competent English language communication) that you would expect. It is my belief that the doctor is a specialist who usually works in the local section of Huashan Hospital. I probably could have seen the same doctor for around 50-100 RMB if I had gone to the local section.

After I paid 300 RMB for my consultation I went to the local section and registered at a cost of 15 RMB (this includes consultation with a general doctor) and 200 RMB for the ultrasound.

Huashan Hospital by local Chinese standards is fairly clean and well equipped. I am by no means an advocate of local hospitals - I've had my share of horrid experiences! My point is that if you are thinking of going to one of these 'foreigner's clinics', make sure you get what you pay for. If you go to this clinic you could get a nice doctor who can speak at least a little English but you may be unlucky and get a ‘specialist’ transferred from the local section with no English language or compassion.
