Summer Detox

With the Shanghai summer upon us and clothing often taking up minimal yardage, we were intrigued by the Detox package offered at Evian Spa promising a slimmer waistline with just a few hours of pampering and the use of Eve Tailor Aroma Oil. We arrived and were immediately put at easy by Evian's minimalist surroundings as we were escorted to the common changing room by our massage therapist. Once robed, we made our way to our private room which housed the massage table and our bath. After examining this cross between an over-sized traditional looking bathtub and a Jacuzzi, we submerged ourselves in the warm water as our therapist began the treatment which involves a rotating cycle of colored LEDs matching the jet cycle. We were assured that a thirty-minute soak was equal to two hours of exercise time. Although we're unsure how that is measured, we did enjoy the half hour of jet-massaged bliss. Once out aquatic papering was over, we moved over to the massage table for a lymphatic drainage massage. Not for those looking for a deep tissue kneading, our therapist's hands glided smoothly across our limbs with long strokes and the lightest of pressure helping, she said, to drain our lymph nodes and improve circulation. We were roused out of a well-circulated haze as our therapist prepped us for our facial. Using the same Eve Tailor detoxing oil she continued her light relaxing strokes across our face and neck. Although post-treatment we couldn't be sure we had a slimmer waistline but our treatment put us in the right frame of mind to face summer.

Cost: RMB1,300

Inspired by the location, the previous review at this website (and the name), my partner and I set out to treat ourselves to a relaxing Sunday afternoon at the Evian Spa today. Our inspiration wore-off not long after we entered, unfortunately. As local and international spa regulars, we were disappointed with this one. The decor may have been nice in the past but it's looking ... tired these days, there was no music, there wasn't a fragrance in the air and there were no chairs to relax in (except at the front desk – think ticket office) as we waited for the front desk consultants to find someone to attend to our booked treatments. We found little to distinguish this one from many others on the busy streets of Shanghai. I was lucky that our front desk consultants quickly located my treatment advisor. My partner was not quite so lucky. After the assuring words, "Please wait a moment", wandering around in the foyer for 10 mins, watching the two consultants hover over their computer and trying to imagine a relaxing and spiritual ambience, he lost interest and decided to go for coffee while I tried to indulge. My 'treatment' was … well, rather mechanical and just a treatment. Great location though. This one’s probably better for those trying their first riverside experience. For our minds and bodies (and credit cards) we'd try another next time. This city is well endowed with great spas.
