definitely a place to check out whenever you go to shanghai looking for some chilling out experience that will give you the same view all top notch restaurants and bars along the bund have without breaking your bank.
we stayed at this hostel and how delighted we were to find out we got a room that was only few meters away from this bar. haha... feels like having bar in your room.
amazing view. one night we sat on small couches next to the door to the outdoor terrace and we felt like we were watching big screen flat tv displaying view of pudong. coolio!

Since I’m looking for a job right now in Shanghai, I tend to be more budget oriented and very happy if a place is both fun and affordable. I’m usually a beer guy and a great place to enjoy a cold one is Captain Bar on top of the Captain Hostel. It’s the cheapest place on the Bund and there's a great view from their outdoor patio. If you don’t feel like sitting outside, you can enjoy their funky interior which looks like the inside of a ship. Hopefully you won’t get seasick after a few beers!

Love to take people to this place, it looks like you're totally lost- wandering around the floors of a youth hostel, then finding a dark bar on the top floor before....boom!
Out on a terrace with one of the best Bund views in the city. Bund-regulars beware: sensible bar prices apply so you might actually go home with some money left.

"My job requires quite a bit of traveling, so whenever I return to Shanghai, there's nothing better than unwinding with a great beer and a view of the Bund. One place that's rather unique and quite down to earth is Captain's Bar on top of Captain's Hostel. The view is amazing and you can enjoy a decently priced beer while having a chat with people from all over the world."

Going pass Fuzhou so often, but only just discovered Captain's Bar, set on the 6th floor of the hotel, it's not visible at street level. I guess that it's got to be the ceapest place you can get drinks with the view of Pudong within the radius of the Bund. Drinks selection a bit limited, but what the hack...

First check out the view and then try their cocktails This place is so grand I had three drinks when I promised myself only one. Their cosmopolitans boozed me up so quickly that the ships on the walls of Captain Bar started moving on their own. Those who aren't lightweights, however, shouldn't have this problem. The view is definitely worth checking out, as the remnants and architectural evidence of China's imperialized past are really best seen from an aerial view.

22.7.09 SCAM. I booked for the eclipse and paid in advance 2 weeks earlier. I made 3 phone calls (last on 20.7.09) asking for the FOOD they were offereing for their 150cny/special eclipse breakfast. In all of them, the answer was "we offer a cocktail" . I would repeat the question: " And about the food??? i do not drink alcohol and certainly I am not interested in a cocktail at 8am" answer: "we are not sure... but relax, it will be really good". I made 3 different calls as I do NOT relax when people cannot answer such a simple question. 2 days before the event (my last phone call was on 20.7.09) they did not know what they would serve.
They scammed us into believing we were getting good food (and that we should relax!) and we got: 2slices of white plain bread, 8 gr of butter, 8gr of jam, a mini tiny croissant and a minicup of fruitsalad. 150 cny/person.
Ohhhh...not even eclipse sunglasses ready or music on the background...3 waitress and a barman serving+preparing food for all the clients...that is translated into NO SERVICE.
Good management won't do this, because they know their good reputation will make them more money than thievery....well, the manager surely thought than an eclipse breakfast special was easy, easy,easy money. IT WAS.
Please, other people who were there today, let the world know about the Captain Bar´s eclipse scam...it was easy money (paid in advance - no way to refuse to pay or walk out) but please, make it NOT that easy for them, SPEAK OUT - try to avoid more dishonest practises such as this.
