This small, low-lit rectangular bar is one of Shanghai’s best places great cocktail. Make your choice from the extensive, yet not over-priced, cocktail menu and the owner Kin or one of his two well-trained bartenders will expertly craft your selection. This understated bar is the hard to find combination of location, clientèle, price and service.

What Constellation at Xinle Lu lacks in style (a blacklight at the bar is just soooo not flattering, you know?) it makes up for in substance -- the bartenders know what they're doing, pumpin' out well-crafted cocktails for those craving one (AKA me after a run-in with bootleg alcohol at an unmentionable club).
They make a decent Old-Fashioned at a pretty reasonable RMB60 -- I sure enjoyed actin' like Don Draper, sippin' it down slowly and delightfully noshin' on complimentary Japanese bar snacks while waiting for a friend to join me. Unfortunately by the time she came the joint was packed to the gills and we had to leave, as patrons aren't allowed to stick around if their butt isn't in a seat. Such a shame, but it turned out for the best as we waltzed on over to Constellation 2 at Yongjia Lu, which is quite an upgrade in terms of ambiance (for all you people trying to impress mates and colleagues).
Moral of the story? Go to the other Constellation or come early to secure a seat for you and your guest(s) -- keep it to one-on-ones or a tiny group as space is very, very limited.

Been there twice now... ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC for 2 people (agree with Traceygiggles!)... if you are a group of more than 3-4, then head to the Constellation 2, more space and ok.. less privacy but still very cosy. Love the Single Malt Whisky list, they have my favourite...Talisker!!! he he he... will go back everytime I have the chance to do so... Would also suggest the management to add one more Single Malt on their list: Lagavuline

we wife and I were heading out for a going away evening, my wife was leaving for a long trip, it was our last night in Shanghai, so we wanted to go a special place and be very private, So we picked this bar. we got there, everything seems nomal, we ordered drinks, as the bartender delivered the drink and my wife reached out for it, the drink got spilled everywhere. Normally, when something like this happaned, the bar will re-make drink for you, we will be happy to pay for it, but in this case, the bartender didnt even offer it, and the manager was very rude, he kept insisting it wasn't his fault, and we got into a shouting match, it was a very minor issue, but because of the poor handling for the management, not only our special night was ruining, but it was very upseting to both of us, and we will never go to this place again! we ask everyone who is going out on the special night with someone special, avoid this place like H1N1!!! It's not worth it, and it's nothing special!

Constellation Bar Tucked in next to Boonna Cafe on Ernai, sorry, Xinle Lu, this is one of the finest cocktail bars in the city. A narrow vault with just enough room for three low tables and one sweeping bar, behind which sparkle 1,000 bottles. Scotch is the specialty – there’s a separate menu just for whisky – but martinis are also recommended and, given the skills and courtesy of the bar staff, the prices (almost everything is RMB60) are more than fair.

Have been a couple of times now. However, on my last trip there was 8 in the group and we were told the group was too large and asked to leave. Lovely place, but keep your numbers small !

Issue 16, Shaken and Stirred: Moscow Mule
"We found the perfect summer drink inside a cool copper mug. A cocktail list standard at Constellation, this intimate bar's classic Moscow Mule (Smirnoff vodka, fresh lime juice and ginger beer) is delicious, but it's not a unique twist on the recipe that makes this one a stand out, it's the ice. One of the few venues in Shanghai to go the extra mile, Kin, Constellation's owner, charcoal filters the water before freezing to ensure its purity and also maximize the ice's coldness. The purer the ice, the colder he says he can get it, slowing the rate that the ice dissolves in your drink, (all other factors being equal, of course) allowing you to savor your cool cocktail that much longer. Combine this long-lasting ice with the cool, copper mug and an expertly prepared drink and you've got the perfect summer sipper."

It is with great reluctance that I write this review. As everyone knows the tricky recipe for the perfect bar is just the right mix of location, people, clientele type, drink price, service and overall atmosphere. To say that Constellation succeeds on all these levels is unfair and inaccurate, but for those of you post the binge drinking excesses of your early twenties and adverse to the wealth flaunting wastefulness of middle age, then Constellation is your bar in almost every respect mentioned. Hint, that last sentence was aimed at thirty year-olds. Located more or less the block behind Element Fresh (Huahai), I've been repeatedly and with each visit find myself enjoying more and more not only their whiskey sours (although, I had to remind them that a better whiskey sour is always made w/ bourbon) but also the ultraviolet light tracks adorning the ceiling. The gaudy furniture fits in nicely with the narrow Japanese run bar and is as conducive to a group outing to a romantic coup de grâce. For the non-smokers, cigarette smoke wasps up nicely but rarely overpowers, so far. If anyone has been here, you’re likely to hate me for revealing this gem of a bar in Shanghai, but for those of you who haven’t, I like my whiskey sours w/ bourbon please.

Have to say, this place really does make some great drinks! They aren't cheap, but the service is professional (very Japanese Style in fact) and the liquor was genuine.
Read one review below where some idiot says he spilled his own drink and expected the manager to just make him another free one ...this is just ridiculous! You go to a nice bar and spill your drink, then you should EXPECT to buy another one. If the manager does step in and offer to get you a replacement, then that is a nice PLUS and you should appreciate it as such.
The manager seemed very nice to me and definitely warmed up when I mentioned I had studied in Japan and tried to chat with him about Tokyo.
Nothing is offered as far as food other than the basic peanuts and bar snacks, but definitely some of the best made cocktails in the city.
