The views of the Huangpu and the Bund from these rooftop terraces come with some added cost but are positively postcard worthy. The crowds are just beginning to take note but that means it's easy to get a table near the zebra-print carpet while enjoying the funk-influenced house music.

Welcome to Bundland (opened June 2006). The newest baby on the Bund block is de la Coat. Don't let the whole "on the coast" geographical misnomer sway you though, because this place is just gorgeous. The staff are attentive and plentiful, the food is good, if a little on the tiny side (but what else would you expect from Japanese owners) and the decor is just yummy. The fifth floor restaurant is chic-ly cool with a DJ baring just as prominent a place as a bar or the tables, the rabbit warren of seating and corridors deserves exploring all the way to the mind-blowing terrace at the top.

Up here, a central bar is barely encased by glass with the rest of the space being taken up by outdoor seating. There are cosy little nooks and crannies, all with a piece of the world's finest cityscape, streaming all the way down the colonial bund and sneaking in the view of Pudong for the price. There are super-lazy Bundbeds, all lay-down-and-tune-out.. with-a-martini-in-hand. Speaking of the drinks, they far outweigh the food, suffice to say this place is not a restaurant, but the list is long and comprehensive and the cocktails, while not exactly the most creative in the world, are perfect in their minimalism, allowing the conversation and the view to take center stage. The real gem here though, is perhaps the finest private drinking den I've seen in Asia. The crow's-nest with a 360 degree view is exactly how I would imagine my finest fantasy room to look, but it comes at a price for a five grand minimum spend. If you can afford it baby, this has to be the ultimate statement of status. Bring your friends, turn up the music, and order the martinis, because the Bund has a new hotspot. And it's our little secret... shhh...

The Thursday night open bar specials are the talk of the town. Add the fantastic food and a fabulous view, and you got yourself a deal. RMB50

Overall a good place to start off the night on Saturdays - especially if you're looking for a light meal before moving on to the clubs. Based on my last visit, its strengths lie in great views and attentive service staff. Detractors: a little pricey for what it is, and the drinks were on the light side.
