Boasting one of the city's largest collections of bottled beers and a good foosball table, this bar is known to get rowdy in the early hours of the morning as people dance on top of the bar to '80s classics, rock or reggae that frequently play over the system at this divey bar. Good bar fare at reasonable prices attracts a budget-minded young crowd.

On the whole not bad, and it's always nice to find somewhere in Shanghai that's a) unpretentious but b) not named something like "Sexy Hello Angel Beer Bar" and full of hookers. The cheeky chappie British manager (or owner?) Charlie is a rambunctious host, the Chinese bar staff are actually capable of being nice to you, and there's a solid selection of beers.

They've done well with the layout. The horseshoe shaped bar is conducive to striking up drunken conversations, but there are also sufficient corners to skulk in if you're feeling antisocial, you don't always want to endure Australians and Canadians hollering in your ear after all. Plus, the TV is placed high above the bar for all to see without obstruction, and there is enough space for people to play fussball and darts without injuring the punters with flailing elbows or errant arrows.

However, a few gripes; as an indefatigable tightwad, it would be nice to have the option of a bog-standard pint of Carlsberg for 30rmb or less (cheapest drink on the menu are those diddy bottles of Qingdao, 30rmb). However pleasant the tipple, spending 40rmb+ is not conducive to getting smashed, which is presumably the whole point of a Canadian bar, judging by the tedious regularity with which I've half-listened to Canadians shouting at me about how much they like to drink. Also, the generic FM-rock that they play is always too loud. Which just encourages the Canadians and Australians to yell in your ear even louder. Turning it down a notch or two would make a big difference without any detrimental effect to the atmosphere.

Oh yeah and there are too many Canadians and Australians. Ho-hum, at least they don't like playing dice games.

Issue 22, Where You Drink: David Lazarowicz

Since I started taking pictures of Shanghai's nightlife, I find myself pretty much in every bar, club or Alldays sipping on a drink, or two. Whenever I need a break from big crowds I stop by the The Beaver for some shots with my football mates. The fresh draft is delicious and you always run into friends there who you can challenge to a game of foosball. This is one of my favorite bars in Shanghai.

quiet drink?! At around 7 or 8pm fine for a quiet drink, but around midnight or later there are often people dancing on the bar. The drink prices are some of the cheapest in Shanghai and there's also Shanghai's biggest bottled beer selection. The hamburgers and fish and chips are renowned for their good taste and reasonable price.
There is also a fusball table. The inflatable kangaroo was just there during the Football World Cup as the owner is Australian........
