This is a sort-of-secret bar, mainly because there's almost no signage. Head down an alley next to the seafood place on Donghu Lu and buzz in through a black door with a cryptic sign. Slight disappointment awaits as you find yourself in a pretty standard posh Chinese bar with expensive cocktails and HK rich kids. Fun, nevertheless.
Ack, what happened?! This used to be pretty cool spot. Gone is the lounge feel. Now, it's like a mini Chinese club. And not a particularly good or hopping one at that. Didn't bother staying so don't know about the drink quality.
Really cool spot. Totally hidden. Wish there were more places like this. You need to go through the front restaurant Dakota to find it, if a friend hadn't taken me, there's no way I would have found it.
It's a simple bar. Dark. Very dark. A lot of ABC boys and a couple foreigners, but the vibe is low key and casual. A good place for an afterwork drink, or if looking for just a chill night. I went on a thursday and there were only a few people there, had it been a bit more full, I definitely would have stayed a bit longer.
Atmosphere and theme is super cool, but thats the only think this place really has going for it...
Cocktails look great on the menu, but I was pretty disappointed when my 75RMB gin-sour lacked both gin and sour...
We had to send back a dirty martini because it was beyond bad, and the nuts that came when we were almost done our drinks were stale.
I really want to like this place, but there are things missing. Good music included.
Wanted to make a booking there but the number is NOT right. Anyone have their contact?
Dark and nice tiny place...english speaking asian crowd (each time is was there), the atmosphere could be great...if the music was not that loud and not that horrible ( too loud and over commercial hip hop music doesn't exactly fit in a lounge bar i think) and if the cocktails were better: screwing a mojito should be forbidden..
Some potential but needs to be improved..
went to this place. had a hard time finding it at first but the first time u go, u feel like you discovered some sort of secret place which makes the first experience that much more fun. nice environment to chill, drinks arent cheap though.
I don't want to sound like a jerk because I really like the crowd at Monkey - I always have a great time there but I think that's mostly because of the friends I go with. The drinks are really bad which is probably why we buy bottles, so Kudos to the weird marketing strategy. It's a great ABC crowd and cool spot but don't have them mix you anything more complicated then a vodka soda...
I come here at least 2 or 3 times a month, it's a great little alley location with a hit and miss crowd. I wish their venue was a little bigger.
Tonight I happened to have brought some of my NYC friends over. I had ordered the 65 rmb Sav. Blanc white wine. When it finally came it was about half of a normal pour. I had asked the server about this and she had informed me this was there normal pour..... well I've been there plenty of time..... THIS was NOT a normal pour. She was happy to bring it back, only to my surprise she brought me a glass that was still barely filled to any standard. I thought maybe the bartender was having an off day...... I guess I was wrong..... I order 3 more glasses, all of them looked like I had already drank half the glass.
I understand the mark up in prices, I mean the bottle doesn't cost more then 60 rmb but when you pay 65 rmb per glass for 4 glasses it really makes you think. On my last glass even my NYC friends (who happened to be in the Food & Beverage industry) told me they skimmed on the wine.
Oh well...... Hopefully the owners will correct this.
Depends on which night you go...went there to relax with friends on weekday and it was fairly chill - exactly what a lounge should be. On Friday and Saturday, it's packed...but still had a great time. Crowd varies each week so makes it interesting - unlike the other places where you basically see with the same faces every week
Bad drinks and full of "cool" people
I can only hash out the same mixed sentiments: not-so-secret and quite disappointing experience in a wanna-be, un-fun bar.
