Masse Bistro & Bar Description

This space has a bunch of beautiful pool tables over two floors but specializes in American food and good cocktails. It used to be called Racks and the front room has been turned into a comedy club.

Massé is a restaurant/lounge located on the Jinxian lu, one of Shanghai’s bustling lifestyle and shopping street. Know it? Walking distance from Metro line 1 Shaanxi Station, it is across the street from Osteria and Citizen Cafe, just up from Pier 39 and Southern Barbarian and around the corner from Maison Pourcel. (If you're old school, it’s on the same little street where the late Kada/DVD Shop was located). Surrounded by restaurants, cafes, boutiques in a true lifestyle element, our new location feels more naturally us. They say you have to walk before you can run. We prefer to strut or swagger. Look Up...Yes, there on the 5th and 6th floor. Join us as we launch the new terrace with sound wall so we’re open late, or soak it up in the sunlit patio. New chef, new menu, relaxed dining atmosphere. With a outdoor terrace overlooking the French concession, those who prefer the open air will definitely find enjoy a meal with friends much more comfortable…or with Shanghai’s unpredictable weather, our glass enclosed atrium will give all the sunlight while protected from the rain or harsh UV. In terms of bar entertainment, we’re showing 24 hour worldwide sports, 4 billiard tables, darts, foosball and shuffleboard. All bundled into one location we offer a unique, fun and relaxing environment to get away from Shanghai’s big city life. With comfortable seating, and two fully stocked bar serving well poured cocktails.

All the food on the menu is top rate. I tried the lasagne and my girlfriend had the steak. Both were amazing and comparable to being back home, not just top rate by China standards. Also, good music selection and the service was on top of our drinks all night. Good spot to add to your list

I agree with the City Weekend review 3 out of 5 stars (if I could give 2.5 stars, I would give that instead). There are plenty of other better bars and restaurants to spend an evening.

I love Masse. Chilled out vibe with friendly staff and customers. Food is pretty good too. It's a casual place to hang out and have a beer and maybe shoot a game of pool.

@albionmonkey you announce comedy shows (from several different accounts) and you give a good review to a bar that has comedy shows..... It is obvious that albiomonkey is making reviews to promote his/her own interests. That's not a real review.

Over the past 6 months, all bad reviews of Masse except albionmonkey's review for something that albionmonkey promotes.

Currently my favorite bar in Shanghai, not only is it a great, chilled out place for drinks, it is home to Shanghai's stand-up Comedy scene. Love it.

Apart from the first review by Epeter: why are all the positive reviews of MASSE written by people who only did 1 review? Well, one of them did 2 reviews, the second review he/she did was a raving review of Cantina Agave. Now you know it is fake! They even write MASSE food is one of the best meals in Shanghai... It's so obviously not! Is it only MASSE people themselves who will write anything positive about MASSE?

My answer to the question above is: Yes. MASSE is in fact a cheap place, with cheap drinks, cheap people, cheap food, cheap everything, including quality. No wonder MASSE is not popular.

The balcony is ok. Good break from the inside.

the golden rule is that you get what you pay for. in this case, you don't even get that. though it is not extremely expensive. don't know how anyone can give this place 5 stars. they can't fool me... concrete walls are not cool, just cheap.

Just went for the first time, and I must say you get an excellent value for your money. We had the Weekend brunch (55 元) which comes with bread of some sort (pancake, grilled cheese, or toast), meat, eggs, baked beans, grilled tomato, and Home-style grilled potatoes. In my opinion the food was quite tasty. One of my friends got the ultimate burger, which he said was one of the best meals he has had since arriving here in Shanghai. The area is also really cool, you can sit on the 6th floor patio and see the surrounding neighborhood while eating your food. There are also a number of pool tables on both floors which is always good fun. To make things better, they have a ton of specials. For example Daily Happy Hour with 2 for 1 Drinks from 2-8PM and buy 5 get 1 free all the time. They also have 50 元 Burger and Beer days, as well as buy one get one Steak days. After my first experience here, my friends and I have decided we will definitely be returning in the future!

This is one of my favorite places to stop by for a chill night in shanghai. It has awesome pool tables and a legit dart setup. Drinks are decently priced and the food is quite good. There burger is above standard and they have many deals going on each night. If your looking for a chill night with some buddies this is definitely a place to go. Also the weekend brunch is delicious!!! The grilled cheese is perfect!

Don't make the mistake of coming here for brunch - I'm assuming it is more of an evening place. A friend wanted to check this place out so we met up on the rather nice balcony. However, by the time my Eggs Benedict arrived the potatoes were room temperature and the eggs were cold. Perhaps if the coffee I'd ordered had been worth consuming that wouldn't have been so bad.

Went here last week and met the owner and his crazycool wife. Awesome spot to hang with friends, shoot some pool, and kick back with some tasty drinks. Crowd was thin, but I had a blast. Definitely recommended.

Much improved over the original. Sure the crowds have thinned and music volume has decreased but.... oh yeah those are good things. This is a great place to go after work with some friends. Empty tables most of the time ensure you actually get to play some pool. Good happy hour specials and I've actually had some fairly good dry martinis here. Owners are nice and friendly, staff is ready and waiting to ensure your glass doesn't go empty

City Weekend Review

Racks opened a pool hall in Xintiandi a couple of years ago. The pool was soon supplanted by dice rolling and balling, as owners transformed the place into a club, booking heavyweight DJs and MCs (Mobb Deep; Nas; who was a no-show). Racks then collapsed under a weight of licensing and financial problems. The new bar is a world away. Just four immaculate tables in a two-floor loft space on one of Shanghai's nicest streets. The walls are exposed concrete, the view is pleasant and the drinks are reasonable (beers from RMB30). No one's reaching for the stars; this is just a cool, inviting space to go for drinks with a bunch of friends. Let's just hope they don't start booking Fatman Scoop.
