What this bar lacks in size it makes up with character. There is a strong French theme with Gallic crooners on the stereo and impressionist painters on the walls. Bright colors and hookah pipes add to the ambiance. Maybe more of a bar than a cafe, Sofa does serve decent coffee and enough food to make it a good stop for a quiet lunch. On occasional evenings there is live folk music performed by foreign and Chinese performers, yet a visit at 9:30pm on a Saturday evening revealed an empty stage and lacklustre patronage. Classic and modern cocktails range from ¥30-38, with bottled beers at ¥30-35. With only a few bars in the Dingxi Lu area, Sofa is not an unwelcome addition; rather it's a quiet bar without pretensions, but with potential. - Mark Andrews
