    City Weekend Says

This used to be The Hut, which was one of the diveyest bars in town (in a good, though shabby way). New management have tarted the space up a bit, but the drinks menu is still reasonably priced. It's a good, inexpensive spot if you live in the area, but bring a crowd of friends because it doesn't get much passing trade.

The Chalet is Shanghai's cozy outpost for those seeking a laidback, warm atmosphere in a chic, low key setting. One of Shanghai's best happy hours, and a Swiss lodge degsin, make for a Shanghai classic.

    Chalet's Chicken Rules the Roost
    Posted on Jul 06 2010

This city has its fair share of fine dining snobs, the type that likes to be critical of the finest restaurants in town just to be contrary. But it’s World Cup season, and bar food is as popular now as it has ever been. Shanghai sports fans’ stomachs have shown incredible resiliency over the years, but that doesn’t mean they should continue to settle for the same sloppy, artery-clogging fare they’ve been scarfing down. Enter The Chalet. The homey bar has a large screen, good drinks and a simply solid, reasonably-priced American bar food menu that tops out at a relatively meagre ¥55 for the Chalet burger. The menu gets its pedigree from Dennis Ni, KABB’s former restaurant manager, and the work he’s put in shows. The menu items have flavor without being overly greasy, but our favorite is the chicken strips (¥45). Unlike the thin, over-breaded, over-fried options you’ll find at most places, The Chalet’s are thick, meaty and hand-breaded to just the right proportion. They come out golden brown and piping hot. Piled generously high in a basket and served with a tangy plum sauce, these savory strips are a great answer for late-night munchies and a complement to World Cup beers.
