Located on the outskirts of downtown Shanghai, this is rough-and-ready Shanghai, complete with concrete floors, cheap bottled beers and tongue-in-cheek Chinese propaganda posters. The stage in back dominates the bar and regularly features Chinese bands and the occasional international set. Make sure it's open before you make the journey.

Although not quite a household name yet, this is one of Shanghai's live music gems, especially for those looking for more than the local punk / rock scene

From my experience with Shanghai live music, I would say that Live Bar is the only reliable and regular music venue in the city right now. Shows are every Friday and Saturday, with movie screenings during the week. The owner just bought a massive video projector, and he redecorates the place, what seems like weekly. New floors, better seating, bigger space and still that comfortable, no frills feeling that no other venue in Shanghai has. If you have been craving the feeling of a western rock bar, this is the place you should be going to.

Wow, some of these comments are really dated. I've been to some recent shows there and this place is probably one of the better venues for live music in Shanghai. Prior management issues aside, if you're trying to hear more than just the punk / rock bands that almost every places hosts, Live Bar acts are worth checking out.

I heard about that insanity. Who is in charge of bringing in this awesome Brainwave Communications and Friends thing? Will they be playing in the area again anytime soon?

Ew... Sounds like more people are trying to claim someone else's accomplishments in Live music. That sucks Brad; I'm sorry to hear.

Not true ... but it should be.
I signed a two year lease/management contract with the owner last August. After some remodeling, better sound, better drinks, and better bands, business finally started to pick up. Due to a flaw in the contract, the owner was able to "re-possess" the place ... with no notice and without returning my (quite steep) deposit.

I hear this place is going out of business Is this true?

Tsingtao bottles are now 15rmb instead of 10rmb like the website says, but booze is still 20-25. This place might be a little far-flung but it's cheaper and more laid-back than any other place I've been in Shanghai.
