This Hong Kong import, designed by Philippe Stark, brings exclusivity, one of the best liquor selections and some of the best trained bartenders to the Shanghai scene--with prices to match. Expect nothing but la crème de la crème of Shanghai's local and foreign crowd. Members only plus guests door policy.

When the upstairs bar at Volar is not so crowded, I love sipping on a Long Dragon while lounging on one of Philippe Starck's black pony armchairs.

One thing to note about this place is that, although sometimes a bit intimidating, Volar throws sweet parties and more importantly they have great bartenders. For people who need something more than "a beer" or "a drink" Volar is great simply because the bartenders have a clue.

New You Can Use: Volar allows in nonmembers in December. Our favorite "members only" club is getting into the holiday spirit and giving Shanghai an early present. In December, Volar is leaving its members-only (or really "membersonly+ guests") policy and throwing open parties so everyone can join the fun. Although we're loathe to share our Philippe Starck-designed hideaway with the masses, everyone should take advantage of this lax door policy while it lasts.

Nightlife News & Gossip, Issue 9 We recently headed over to Volar to enjoy some of their delicious drinks and chat with Catherine Wong about all the rumors we'd been hearing about one of our favorite watering holes. First, we were a bit dismayed to see that Alex, Volar's headlining bartender, flew the coop–thankfully he didn't take their drink menu with him. We also chatted with Wong about the rumors we've heard that Volar is closing. "Definitely not true," she says. Apparently what people are talking about is their plans to close the bottom floor for renovations (lounge area upstairs will still be open, no worries). Although the club has tried to split the difference between club and lounge in the past, they're finally doing away with the downstairs club area and making it into an extension of the upstairs lounge which has found a dedicated following.

Very cool interior. Wish they'd drop the fake member stuff. The default place for my friends on an ad-hoc party night, when someone hasn't booked a table somewhere else.
