Club Mook Description

Mook opened with a bang and was temporarily closed by the cops for a noise citation. This new electronic music oasis has some sturdy foundations with their visual effects designed by Visual Drugstore and a sound system put together by Meyer.

MOOK.

Contemporary night life experience.

MOOK Shanghai brings a new wave of night life experience to the Shanghai scene.

The MOOK interior reflects modern, dynamic city life style and is complemented by a unique 3D mapping structural installation above the stage and dance floor, created by leading visual artistes from Germany, The Visual Drugstore.

The Visual Drugstore represents the creative vision of visual artiste Markos Kern, the German creative company specialises in bespoke 3D mapping projects, they create environments for night clubs and festival all over Europe, notably the famous German festival Timewarp, as well as undertaking art projects, using their massive projection trucks to carry out guerrilla mapping events on iconic buildings and locations.

For MOOK they have created a unique structure that will feature a bespoke visual mapping show. The structure will grow and develop as the life of Mook itself grows with elements being added, moved and changed to reflect the changing nature of the night life experience.

The Mook sound system is another first for Shanghai, bringing the same Meyer Sound system that reverberates around the legendary Berlin night club, Berghein Panorama Bar.

Mook music is directed by UK party specialists Godskitchen. Those who have been in Shanghai for a while will remember the musical madness that GK curated at the defunct Bonbon club, who's reputation for delivering the best music in the city could never be doubted. Mook has invited Godskitchen to bring their global music experience to Shanghai again.

Godskitchen itself will throw regular GK party's at Mook on Friday nights, bringing a combination of the hottest international DJs along side some of Shanghai's own favourite DJs.

Mook weekly schedule will feature a mix-mash of up front party vibes, with a policy firmly rooted in the local night life culture, but delivered with an appreciation of international standards.

Aiming to combine the best of local and international clubbing experiences, Mook aims to deliver a contemporary assault on the senses.

It's an okay club ... people complain about the security, but we had no problems with them since we didn't agitate them. There are security guys in clubs that can handle/tolerate drunk assholes/bitches and there are security guys, like in Mook, who just don't have the patience for that ... I understand them :)
Anyways, the club's overlay is limited and it gets very crowded. I think it's basically designed for the rich Shanghai kids since the sofa area is really nice and constantly watched over by the service staff.
I'm sorry for the promoters, who's job is it to call all the laowais to this place for free drinks, but Mook is more for the local rich crowd. Laowais there are like props (a decoration to attract the local crowd). It's no wonder why the security guys don't mind to push and kick them laowais, but almost ass-kissing the rich Chinese kids :)
The sound and light system is good though. Alone for that I would recommend to check out the place. If you're ordering from the bar, make sure to order from the laowai girl bartender (I think it's the only laowai working there). She's good looking and nice, and if you ask her nicely to put more alcohol in your drink, she'll do it. But don't try to flirt with her, because I think that one of the security guys is her boyfriend (maybe that's why they beat up some of the laowais).
All in all I would advise to give this place a chance and check it out :)

had a very traumatic experience in this club. we were invited there one night by a promoter, a very nice girl who isn't from shanghai, we were given a table and some free drinks and the night seemed to be going well until one of my friends was dragged from the dancefloor fir no apparent reason by four of five security men.

they took him outside and dragged him up the road, presumably looking for an area with no cctv. they then proceeded to beat him quite badly, kicking him in the head, face and ribs and also choking him.

he made a statement to the police but when mook were contacted they denied the security men worked there.

this is a common problem in china. bouncers who are hired in this manner can't be held accountable for their actions and are often nothing more than hired thugs.

@daria1524 et al

You don't seem too smart (perhaps that's why you spend your time clubbing?) so I'll spell it out for you:

If you want to make an accusation against a business that can damage that business's reputation, you'd better have proof or they themselves can take you to court. If you come to a website, make a one-time post about how awfully you were treated/how you had your head stuck down the toilet after the seafood platter, then you need pictures to prove that you were beaten or a doctor's note to prove you were sick. Otherwise, you could easily be another business attempting to defame a rival. Or even some disgruntled little snot who was annoyed that the drinks didn't come quick enough or your ass wasn't kissed to your satisfaction.

Is that simple enough? No? Well, I'll say it again: pics or it didn't happen.

Hmm what are you the police, that wants proof? We are here just to comment on the experiences we have had and if we didn't have a negative one why would we write on here and waste our time?! And if someone is food poisoned do you want a picture of them puking in the toilet or what? Posting photos is just a bizarre request which should be ignored , like Mook itself!

@shanghaiexpat2012

It's always suspicious when people turn up to trash a place for violence/food poisoning - and then never provide any evidence. Mook could well be the most violent place in Shanghai, but without actual proof, more people signing up to post one-time comments is hardly evidence.

And I note with interest, that no actual evidence has been provided thus far.

Don't know how this club hasn't been shut down. The security are very physical, or more to the point, sadist thugs. They constantly shove people off the high stage (including girls - how about asking us to get down!?) even though there's no indication that it's not allowed to dance there, which it is in most other clubs in Shanghai! Security broke one guys nose just for getting on the stage.

Narsfweasels, not sure why you want PMs of injured people's faces! But I think the evidence is pretty clear from all the comments that this place is staffed by psychopaths.

Mook, change your security, and you'll be an OK club. In the meantime, AVOID like the plague.

Terrible experience. Went out for a friend’s birthday and knew a promoter there. The night was going great except for 10 security guards circling us around on the dance floor. Later on the night they were aggressively pushing me and my friends just to go from one back of the room to another and also pushing people off the stage without saying a word of warning. And it didn’t matter if you were female or male! To top it all off my phone was stolen in the end of the night, so watch out for pick pockets. Please avoid this place!

Nothing appealing here. Overpriced drinks, terrible layout for a club, and aggressive security. Unless you have friends who have a table here, steer clear.

Worst experience not just in Shanghai, but in my life. My friends and I were in the club having a great night when someone came up behind me and shoved me. I shoved him back instinctively and was no sooner set upon by four bouncers. They dragged me aggressively to the lift whereby they pinned me to the wall, arm on neck, and started punching me in the head and body. When the lift arrived, they dragged me away from the club and really let rip, kicking, stomping, punching as I lay on the floor in fetal position. The end result was that I was taken, unconscious, to the hospital and advised to have a brain scan.

These people are animals and deserve to be locked up.

IF ANYONE HAS A SIMILAR EXPERIENCE, PLEASE GET IN TOUCH, we are going to the police and media to make sure these people can't hurt anyone again.

Surely not my favorite place in Shanghai. The entire club is full of tables, a dance floor is actually non-existent. The music was good though and the staff is super friendly... maybe it's better not to go there on a weekend to actually get a chance to get on this tiny dancefloor - or to get a table, if you like to party like this...

Oh Mook.... I love the music, love the layout, wait staff is okay, love the large Grey Goose private room in the back. I hate the roughhousing security guards. Okay so dancing on the stage is not allowed but there is no reason to shove a bunch of girls off. No gentle ushering, literally pushed off the stage. Come on guys, that's not how you treat ladies. Seriously would have been a 4 1/2 star if it weren't for the security dudes.

Godskitchen are no longer anything to do with Mook. They broke off their relationship in the first week of October, just FYI.
