Situated right on the edge of Jinjihu, Ombra has a unobstructed view of the lake and with its large windows it's naturally brightly lit. The vibe of the place is clean and orderly with attention to detail.
The crab salad (78 RMB) was nicely presented and included a large dollop of caviar though the crab taste was partially masked by the creamy avocado and the caviar.
The tiger prawn jar (98 MRB) was one of the most visually appealing dishes we've seen in a long time. The large prawns were immersed in a jar containing freshly squeezed orange juice and orange peel for zest and included Parmesan for sprinkling on top. The mix-match of contrasting tastes worked well in its favor.
The seafood paella (128 RMB) was generous in its seafood to rice ratio and if you let the dish cool down a little after sprinkling some freshly grated Parmesan on top, the flavors are more pronounced.
The two steaks Australian Wagyu M6 sirloin 358 and the Black Angus Tomahawk Steak 588 were very well cooked being juicy and lightly seasoned and it was a pleasure to see that the chef was able to still add a crust and render some of the fat even when the steak was ordered as rare. The sirloin was very tender and the tomahawk was large, juicy and filling.
For desert (98 RMB) it was a trio of tiramisu, red velvet cake and fruit sabayon. The red velvet cake was the highlight of the deserts, after a large steak the fruit sabayon was a refreshing touch.
Throughout the meal the staff at Ombra were attentive and quick to clear away dishes when finished, making room for the next course. Ombra would be a nice choice for a date or anniversary without being overly formal and offering an excellent meal for the price.
