Here’s the chance to witness some extra-terrestrial landscapes right here on Earth itself. Linwu Caves are an elaborate network of spacious limestone caverns that present views highly reminiscent of scenes from Hollywood sci-fi movies. Inside, the cave floor is studded with a bizarre array of oddly-shaped stalactites, while stalagmites cling from the rocky dome-shaped ceiling high above. Linwu Caves is found on Xishan Island (Xishan Dao), located in the middle of Suzhou’s Taihu Lake. Long considered a sacred spot by practitioners of Taoism, the area is shrouded in mystery and legend. Many believe that these were the famed training grounds of fighting monks who were rumored to be so well-versed in martial arts that they could kill with no more than a flick of the wrist. These days, you may still spot some monks living in the area, but it’s unlikely you’ll ever witness anything more thrilling than saffron-colored robes, prayer beads and an alms bowl. You’re probably better off exploring the mysterious cave tunnels, or wandering around the hiking trails scattered throughout the island.
